------------

"Huh?" Issac was so stunned by his fiancée’s question that the argument he had been sure his question would have aroused, receded from his thoughts.

He gave Maxi a befuddled look, "I don’t understand. Why are you so interested in my mother’s....." He trailed off, "Oh." He caught Maxi’s eyes this time as understanding dawned on him.

Issac grimaced slightly, "Trust me, you do not want to know. My mother was so enamored with my father, she married him at quite a young age."

Maxi did not need to ask for further explanation, not when it was clear as day to her. She nodded her head in disappointment realizing indeed she was older than Issac’s mother. Issac’s mother might appear older because of childbirth and life sufferings, or it might just be horse shifter’s gene to look much younger than the average Fae, but it still didn’t change the fact she —Maxi — should be Issac’s great-grandmother if looked at logically.

Maxi had always prided on being older and perceived herself as a great sage but now, she loathed her age and wished she belonged to the younger generation because of Issac. Issac was not the first Fae she had been with, she had fallen in and out of love with countless others over the centuries — including those who betrayed her and died in her hands and those she had to let go because she did not want them hurt. Although the percentage of the ones she killed was far greater than the ones she pushed away for their own safety.

The noble thing Maxi had to do was to break things up with Issac before they got deeply entangled emotionally, but Maxi did not want to. For once in her long lifetime, she wanted to be selfish and risk it all. Maxi was the last of her kind as far as she knows. She hasn’t run into another horse shifter for centuries now in the Fae realm. If her kind had died off or relocated to another realm, she had no idea. None of them liked her from the start, they wouldn’t care either if she died in the Fae realm and the feeling was mutual.

Issac saw the shadow of devastation that crossed her features and decided to do something about it. He closed the space between them and pulled her into his body. Issac embraced her tightly, providing comfort in his little way knowing Maxi was not the type to show forth her troubles.

They stayed that way for a while before Issac gently disentangled his arms from her shoulder, circling her waist instead and pulling her close. Issac smoothed her hair from her face like he might a child’s and said, "She doesn’t have to know."

Maxi looked at him intensely as if really seeing him for the first time. She opened her mouth to speak but it came out as a croak with the strange emotions bubbling inside of her, "You would do that for me?"

Issac chuckled, "Lying by omission is not exactly a crime. I love my mother, but I don’t think she loves me enough to let me date my ancestors."

Maxi looked at him in surprise, a sparkle in her once dull eyes, "Really? An ancestor?"

Issac beamed wider, "Is there any other suitable term for our age difference? Moreover, you call me shy Fae even when I don’t like it, I think I’ve gotten a nickname for you too, my ancestor." He flourished an arm in a playful sarcastic bow.

Maxi gasped dramatically, a slow smile working its way across her face and into her eyes, "That is quite shocking, my shy Fae has become cheeky lately."

"Guess you bring out the worst in me," Issac said with a hint of humor.

"Oh, don’t worry, there’s more from where that came from," Maxi flirted back with him, absent-mindedly drawing circles on his chest through his clothes.

Issac broke away from her, a hand on his chest, appearing shocked, except his acting failed woefully and Maxi burst into such a loud, ringing fit of laughter that even Issac could not help joining in. This was the happiest Maxi had been in a while and she couldn’t help but stare at him even as the joy bubbled within her.

They laughed until their belly hurt and were now staring at each other, the laughter gurgling to a halt in her throat as Issac studied her with dark eyes. She returned the gesture, her own gaze pacing from his eyes to her lips, and heard him draw a deep breath.

They moved together as if pulled towards each other by an invisible thread. Maxi reached for his face, caressing it as she whispered, "I should let you go before you get hurt, but I’m too selfish to do so."

"Good. Be selfish."
