"W—what?" Valerie stammered, his eyes wide with disbelief. He gawked at Islinda like a moron, unable to fathom what he had just heard.

"You heard me right, Valerie." Islinda sighed, looking away. She didn’t appreciate the pained expression on his face because it cut right through her. But this was something she should have done a while ago.

"I —I didn’t... No, I mean..." Valerie struggled to utter a comprehensive word. His right hand trembled, and he quickly clasped it with his left one to steady himself. He couldn’t let her see him this vulnerable.

He finally said, "I don’t understand."

"What’s not to understand?" Islinda responded without looking at him. "I should have done this a while ago, probably that day you denied our relationship —"

"I was trying to protect you!" He shouted, his expression darkened like a storm.

The ferocity in his eyes scared Islinda, considering this was the first time she was breaking up with a Fae, and she had no experience in the dating department. Was he going to hurt her? The thought did cross her mind until she felt the gemstone and the fear ebbed.

Islinda told him, "You cannot deny it, Valerie. This relationship ended the moment you returned to the Fae realm to take up your princely roles. There are just too many lies and obstacles between us. And I know you know deep down that our relationship ended too."

"No, no, no...." Valerie shook his head, his expression hardening. He sneered, eyes full of burning hatred, "This is because of Aldric, isn’t it? What did he tell you about me? He has gotten into your head and filled you with rubbish."

"No, Valerie, you’re not even listening to me...!"

He cut her off sarcastically, "Of course, it’s him." His eyes flared with consuming anger, "Did he make you a deal you cannot refuse as long as you end things with me?"

"By the gods," Islinda groaned into her palm. She sighed, rubbing her face. Had she known this conversation would turn out this way, she wouldn’t have given him the chance to talk in the first place. She wanted them to talk like mature people, not fight like children.

Valerie continued, "I warned you about him, Islinda. I warned you back then in the human realm about my brother you should avoid at all costs. It’s my fault anyway; this is what I was working hard to avoid and yet it happened." He looked at her hopefully, reaching for her hand and placing it in his, saying, "But don’t worry, I’ll resolve this. I will turn things back the way they were."

Islinda felt a tight feeling in her chest, especially as she saw the trust in Valerie’s eyes. Couldn’t he understand that she was not worth it? Valerie deserved happiness, but not with her. She was a confused human, dealing with Aldric and his alter ego, and adding him to the mix was too much.

"You know what? I’m done with this." Islinda stood up abruptly, running her hand through her hair. She had come outside to breathe, but Valerie’s presence had once again sucked the air away.

"No, don’t go," Valerie grabbed her arm.

She stared down at the gesture and then back at his face, saying coldly, "Let go, Valerie."

"No, I won’t, Islinda. I know that you are scared and confused, and I’m not going to let Aldric win. If he thinks that he can ruin my relationship just because of what happened with Tatiano —"

"I slept with Aldric!" Islinda screamed in an outburst.

Islinda could feel the change, the static in the air. At first, Valerie seemed to not get it, already opening his mouth to dispute her words, only for it to dawn on him. His eyes widened as large as the moon she was used to seeing whenever she laid outside in the village. Then shock came, and he involuntarily let go of her hand, stumbling a step back.

And then came the anger, followed by betrayal. Islinda knew the anger was directed at her, but the betrayal? He looked at her with accusation in his eyes. Finally, understanding and acceptance followed. But that quickly? Islinda had no idea how his mind worked.

Islinda threw her hands up, saying apologetically, "I’m sorry, Valerie, but it’s truly over for us."

She turned to leave, only for Valerie to grab her arm.
