Isaac stood frozen in place, a rush of unsettling thoughts coursing through his mind. None of it was good news. If Anya knew about Maxi’s secret, then the love of his life was in danger. Anya was not someone who would blab, she was skilled at keeping secrets. However, it was evident that she despised Maxi and wanted her out of the picture. Anya’s discovery of Maxi’s secret was all the proof needed.
Before Isaac could utter a word to inquire about how she obtained Maxi’s secret, Anya interjected, "I had someone investigate her background and—"
"You did what?" Isaac snapped.
Anya nervously replied, "That’s not the important point here, Isaac. The point is that her records were not found. I hired a professional, someone experienced and successful, and yet he couldn’t find any information on the Fae you’re dating. It’s as if she doesn’t even exist in this realm. Do you realize what that means, Isaac?" Desperation crept into her voice as she moved closer, hoping he would listen.
"Hold on a minute," Isaac pinched the bridge of his nose, taking a deep breath. He frowned at Anya and asked, "You’re telling me that you paid someone to investigate Maxi?" His scowl deepened. "Why would you do that?"
Anya swallowed, slightly afraid of Isaac’s potential anger over her actions. However, she quickly realized that this was an opportunity to confess her feelings to him. She lifted her head with determination and boldly declared, "Because I care about you, Isaac."
There was a vulnerable look on Anya’s face as she finally revealed her true emotions. "I’ve had feelings for you ever since we were children. I thought the gods ordained us together and we are going to be mates but when nothing happened, I decided not to say a word because I didn’t want to ruin our friendship. It was so annoying that you would flirt with others but wouldn’t treat me the same way. So when that night happened between us... "
Isaac’s jaw visibly clenched and his body stiffened at the mention of that night, yet he remained silent, giving Anya the chance to finish.
Continuing, Anya said, "I thought things would change, but you left without a word. When you returned, I believed that maybe you had finally realized how perfect we could be together. But instead, you came back with her." Anya’s expression turned dark and venom seeped into her voice. "I knew there was something off about that Fae. I know you, Isaac, and you wouldn’t easily fall for someone like her. Now the truth is out. You can’t trust that female, Maxi." Anya reached out to touch him while making her point, but Isaac snatched his arm away.
Though the gesture hurt Anya, it didn’t deter her from speaking further. With determination, she stated firmly, "Maxi isn’t who she claims to be. She’s hiding a dark secret, and I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s a hidden witch or something even worse, a dark—"
"That’s enough!" Isaac’s voice boomed, making Anya jump in shock.
Anya stared at Isaac in complete disbelief. He had never treated her this way before, all because of a female... Damn. The realization washed over Anya, and she looked at Isaac with wide eyes, finally understanding.
"You know, don’t you?"
Isaac didn’t need to answer; the stubborn clenching of his jaw said it all. Maxi let out a startled gasp.
Then her eyes narrowed, darkened with anger. She lashed out, "You know that Maxi isn’t right for you, and yet you...!"
