As Isaac hurried down the corridor, his footsteps reverberated off the stone walls, matching the pounding of his heart. Panic surged through him like a tidal wave as he chased after Maxi, his mind filled with worry and fear.
"Maxi, wait!" he called out, his voice echoing through the empty corridor. He quickened his pace, desperate to catch up before she disappeared from sight. Each step felt agonizingly long as he pushed himself to move faster, his senses heightened with urgency.
His thoughts were consumed by concern for Maxi, weighed down by the responsibility of her safety. He couldn’t shake the dread that gnawed at him, fueled by the uncertainty of Aldric’s reaction once he discovered Islinda’s disappearance.
But Isaac knew it was his own fault. If only he had realized what would happen, he would have gone after Islinda as soon as she left. However, he had trusted his abilities, believing that Islinda wouldn’t be far before catching up to her. He had prioritized restraining Aldric before leaving Maxi with him. Above all else, his mate came first. Little did he know the consequences this choice would bring.
As he turned a corner, Isaac caught a glimpse of Maxi up ahead, swiftly making her way towards their room. Thank goodness. Isaac couldn’t help but think she was about to do something foolish.
"Maxi, please," he pleaded, his voice filled with desperation as he closed the distance between them. "We need to talk about this."
"Now is not the time for talking!" she retorted, not even bothering to look at him.
Maxi increased her pace, determined to take matters into her own hands. Isaac’s heart sank as he realized she was set on facing the situation alone.
With a heavy heart, Isaac quickened his own steps, filled with worry for both Maxi and Islinda. He understood his mate’s fears, but he knew she couldn’t handle this on her own. As they reached their room, he braced himself for what Maxi had in mind.
Isaac stood in the doorway, his eyes widening in disbelief as he watched Maxi hastily pack his clothes into a bag. What in the Fae? She moved quickly, almost frantically, tossing items in with trembling hands, fear and urgency etched across her face.
"Maxi, what are you doing?" Isaac asked with a furrow, his voice laced with concern as he stepped further into the room. He couldn’t comprehend why she was packing his belongings so hurriedly, her actions betraying a sense of panic that sent shivers down his spine.
Maxi didn’t look up from her task, fully focused on getting everything packed. "You have to leave," she said, her voice tense with urgency.
Isaac froze, noting the pronoun she used, "you".
He shook his head, refusing to believe what she had just said. "What?"
"You have to get out of here before Aldric finds out about Islinda," Maxi explained, meeting his gaze for a moment before turning her attention back to the task at hand. "I’ll pack the essentials for you. Clothes, food, water, money. Then you need to go to Oma..." She paused, thinking it over, "No, you need to take Oma and Kayla and run, because your home would be the first place Aldric would search."
Isaac’s heart skipped a beat as the gravity of the situation sank in. But he found her request so absurd that he couldn’t help bursting into laughter, tears escaping his eyes as he wiped them away with his thumb.
His expression turned serious, and he made it clear to Maxi, "I’m not going anywhere."
Maxi paused in her packing, her face contorting with pain as she looked up at him. "Isaac, this is serious," she said, her voice tinged with exasperation. "You have to leave before Aldric finds out about Islinda and who she’s with."
He leaned back to speak, looking into her eyes, "We’ll figure it out. Also, he would confront the prince and he’d let Islinda let go."
