"He’s my mate!" Maxi’s anguished scream pierced the air just as the deadly projectile hovered mere seconds away from piercing Issac’s chest.
"He’s my mate..." Maxi echoed carefully, her voice firm and resolute, repeating the words in case Aldric hadn’t heard her the first time.
Now, the spear hung suspended in the air, frozen in its trajectory, thanks to Aldric’s sheer force of will. His body was rigid, his feet firmly planted on the ground as he held the deadly weapon back just in time, his expression wrought with conflict and turmoil.
Issac’s nerves coiled tightly within him, his entire being paralyzed with fear. He dared to glance down, only to find the tip of the spear hovering dangerously close to his chest, pressing against his skin with a menacing presence. A small bead of blood welled up where the point had punctured his flesh, serving as a stark reminder of the potential deadly consequences had Aldric not hesitated at the last moment.
Damn it.
Maxi’s warning hadn’t been an exaggeration. Aldric had indeed intended to kill him. Despite the comparatively brief time spent with Aldric compared to the years alongside Maxi, Issac had believed they had formed some sort of bond. Yet, the reality now seemed grimly clear: the prince harbored no such sentiment. The realization struck him like a blow to the chest, leaving him reeling with a mix of betrayal and hurt. Why did it hurt so much to know that Aldric truly wished him dead?
At Aldric’s command, the spear of ice fell to the ground and shattered into a million pieces, the shards sparkling like diamonds in the morning light filtering through the window. The room fell silent, save for the sound of their labored breaths and the weight of the revelation hanging heavily in the air.
"No, no, you’re lying..." Aldric’s voice wavered, his head shaking as if to dispel whatever magical suggestion Maxi had used to implant such a notion in his mind. Anger and confusion warred in his expression. "That’s impossible!"
"And yet you expect me to believe that you and Islinda are mates, a mere human," Maxi hissed, her fury palpable as she bristled at Aldric’s dismissal of the bond between her and Issac.
Aldric’s growl reverberated through the room, a warning laced with suspicion. "That is if you’re not trying to manipulate me into believing such so that I can let him go," he retorted, his tone tinged with distrust. He was not foolish enough to fall for Maxi’s wiles.
"Then get into my head and I’ll show you everything that you need to know," Maxi shot back, her voice steady and resolute.
"What?" Aldric’s confusion was palpable, his brow furrowing in disbelief at Maxi’s unexpected offer.
"You need evidence that I’m not manipulating you, don’t you? Since you never trust anybody, why don’t you see for yourself in my head," Maxi challenged, her tone defiant. She lifted a brow, a daring glint in her eyes. "Or are you scared of what you might discover?" Her taunt hung in the air, a direct challenge to Aldric’s pride and power.
Aldric scowled at her, his anger simmering beneath the surface, but his resolve remained unyielding. Despite his irritation at Maxi’s audacity, his gaze was filled with grim determination.
"Brace yourself because this is going to hurt," he warned, his voice dripping with menace as he prepared to delve into Maxi’s mind, ready to uncover the truth behind her words.
Maxi barely had time to react before Aldric seized her face in his hands, his touch rough and invasive as he forcefully delved into her mind
"Maxi!" Issac’s voice echoed through the room, his concern evident despite the muffling effects of the frost sealing his mouth shut
A wretched scream tore from Maxi’s throat, the overwhelming agony coursing through her. Tears streamed down her cheeks as the invasive intrusion felt like a hot knife slicing through her consciousness, leaving behind a trail of searing pain.
