"I trust you had a pleasant night, Islinda," Aldric said, his lopsided grin in place as usual.
Islinda scowled at him, feeling irked by his perpetual cheerfulness. It certainly wasn’t helping her current state, and she had half a mind to slap the grin right off his face.
Aldric must have sensed her mood shift, for his smile faltered and he raised a questioning brow. "Are you okay?"
"Yes, I’m fine," Islinda replied a bit too hastily, hoping he would take the hint and leave her alone. But she should have known better.
Aldric stepped a little too closely, and his intoxicating scent enveloped Islinda’s senses.
Oh, gods.
It took everything within Islinda not to lean closer, craving more of his scent that seemed to soothe the yearning deep inside her.
She imagined pressing her nose against the crook of his neck, inhaling him deeply, the temptation almost overpowering. Her tongue would unconsciously dart out to taste him... No, no, no. Islinda abruptly halted the dangerous thought, though the deed had already been done, evident in the heat pooling between her legs.
Lost in her thoughts, Islinda realized she had fisted her hand in the horse’s mane until it made a grunt, jolting her back to reality. She involuntarily let go, startled.
"Are you okay?" Aldric’s voice was laced with concern. "You’re sweating, Islinda." He reached out to touch her face, but Islinda swatted his hand away.
"Don’t touch me," Islinda warned him desperately, fearing she would lose the last shred of control she had been clinging to with just one touch.
Aldric was about to respond when he inhaled sharply, his eyes darkening with lust as his gaze locked with Islinda’s. She froze, realizing he had sensed her arousal. Fuck. He knows now.
"You desire me," Aldric stated in a gravelly, thick tone.
"Don’t delude yourself, it’s not happening," Islinda retorted, glaring defiantly at him.
Aldric’s eyes chilled, and he snarled low, "You would rather suffer than let me ease your torment?" he asked, bewildered.
"Exactly," Islinda answered firmly. "We have rules to follow—"
"Damn the rules! Damn your human inhibitions! Damn your confusion!" Aldric erupted, pulling Islinda against him in a swift motion that left her head spinning.
"Aldric..." Islinda’s voice trailed off as she went still in his embrace. "Let me go."
But Aldric held on stubbornly, his tone softening as he tried to coax her. "It wouldn’t take long, and you’d be screaming my name. I can smell your arousal, maité beag, and you’re drenched. Allow me to help you."
Islinda ignored the endearment, her resolve wavering as she felt herself melting in his arms. However, she knew she couldn’t give in too soon. She understood Aldric’s tactics all too well; if she gave him an inch, he would take over the entire space. She had set the rule in place for a reason, and Aldric needed to learn that he couldn’t control her with mere physical desire.
"Do you know how you can help me?" Islinda shot back, her tone sharp. "By leaving me the hell alone. That would make me feel a lot better." She spat the words out, locking eyes with him and summoning all her bravery.
