Anya’s case was resolved smoothly. Upon learning of their daughter’s crimes and subsequent demise, her parents accepted the news without resistance.
Surprisingly, it emerged that Anya’s mother had been aware of her daughter’s strange behavior and dubious dealings, yet she had refrained from sounding the alarm. In her defense, she cited Elena’s profound love for Issac, never imagining it would escalate to the point of endangering his mate. Their cooperation in the investigation facilitated a swift conclusion, and soon it seemed as though the entire ordeal had never occurred.
The next day, Anya’s body was released to her parents for burial. However, the news of her actions had already spread rapidly through their community, casting a dark shadow over her memory. Regrettably, her attempt to disrupt a bonded pair was deemed abominable, leading to harsh public judgment upon her grieving family. Those who attended the burial did so not to pay respects to Anya’s memory but to witness and ridicule the tragic outcome of her actions.
Amidst the judgmental gazes of the onlookers, Anya’s parents and, shockingly, Oma, were the only ones to perform the burial rites before the pyre. Out of respect for Anya’s dignity and the gruesome nature of her demise, her body remained shrouded in a white cloth, shielded from public view unlike their tradition. As the tall pyre was set ablaze, Anya’s remains were consigned to the flames in a somber farewell.
As the smoke climbed high, Anya’s mother burst into tears and her husband held and comforted her, unlike Oma who watched the scene emotionlessly. Oma knew Anya would not rest with their ancestors, no, she cursed her, wishing her spirit would roam around hopelessly.
The only reason Oma had come was to support Anya’s mother since everyone deserted her. The both of them had been friends even before their children were born. Anya’s sin was Anya’s sin and not her mother’s — even though she could have spoken out earlier when she suspected her daughter’s odd behavior and saved the heartbreak. Perhaps then, her daughter would have been alive. Not to mention, Oma would never have forgiven her if anything had happened to Maxi.
The death of a mate was a harrowing ordeal, a wrenching separation of twin souls fused together as one. With each passing moment, that connection grew stronger, nurtured by time and shared experiences. Thus, when one mate perished, it felt as though a part of the soul had been torn asunder, leaving behind an agonizing void. The grief was often so overwhelming that many succumbed to madness or death, unable to bear the weight of their loss. Only the resilient few managed to withstand the crushing weight of sorrow, though they were forever altered by the experience, marked by an indelible scar upon the soul.
Though Oma and her husband had not been blessed as mates, the love they shared was profound and enduring. Even now, long after his passing, she still felt the ache of his absence. Consequently, the mere thought of her young son losing his Maxi, his destined mate, whether dark Fae or not, filled her with a deep-seated dread.
Due to Oma’s insistence, Karle and Issac found themselves compelled to attend the burial. Issac believed his mother was too good for her own good and he could not comprehend how her mind worked. Anya had attacked her as well. Treated her with no respect. She should hate Anya as much as he did right now.
The incident continued to haunt Issac, festering like an open wound in his heart. While Maxi had borne the physical brunt of the attack, Issac now bore the weight of an unshakeable fear—that he might awaken one day to find Maxi once again ensnared by their enemies.
Kayla’s anguish mirrored her brother’s, her heart shattered by the betrayal of someone she had considered a sister. She had taken Anya as a sister and she betrayed her in the worst way possible. Kayla vividly recalled the moment Anya had hunted her down like prey when she attempted escaping from the confines of their home after she attacked Oma.
Remembering the event still sent chills down her spine and her sleep were plunged with nightmares these days. Anya had kidnapped her and kept her in a different room from her mother. During that time in Anya’s captivity, the mad fae would threaten killing Oma, then her, if Issac ended up choosing Maxi.
It was either Issac choose his dark Fae scum and lost his family, or he surrendered Maxi to be tried and killed as a dark Fae, then Issac ended up with her and everyone was happy. It was the most traumatizing event.
