Gabbi felt as if she were plunging into an abyss, an endless darkness her scream echoing off the stone walls, only for a blinding light to suddenly envelop her. She instinctively raised her arm to shield her eyes, squinting against the overwhelming brightness. For a moment, she was disoriented, her senses overwhelmed by the sudden shift from darkness to light. But as the intensity gradually lessened, Gabbi dared to open her eyes, and what she saw took her breath away.
The darkness was gone, replaced by a bustling, vivid scene that was both surreal and fascinating. Gabbi blinked rapidly, trying to make sense of her new surroundings. It was as if she had been transported to another world entirely. The cavernous space stretched out before her, filled with strange, birdlike creatures that went about their business as if it were just another day. They moved gracefully, their wings fluttering lightly as they communicated with one another
Gabbi realized she was indeed in a cave, but it was unlike any cave she had ever seen or imagined. The space was enormous, with natural light streaming in from some unknown source above, illuminating the bustling market below.
The stalls and shops were all carved directly into the stone, their rough-hewn facades blending seamlessly with the rock walls. It was a city, hidden away beneath the earth, and yet teeming with life and activity. There were marketplaces filled with goods Gabbi couldn’t begin to identify, and homes carved into the stone, their entrances adorned with colorful, glowing crystals that gave the place an otherworldly ambiance.
For a moment, Gabbi was awestruck by the sheer scale of it all. Who would have thought that such creatures could have built a thriving city within it? But then the reality of her situation hit her with a jolt, and her awe turned to terror. She was still falling. And falling fast.
A louder, more desperate scream tore from Gabbi’s throat as she plummeted through the air. The wind whipped past her, and her heart pounded in her chest as she watched the ground rush up to meet her. Below, the bird people noticed her descent, their once serene expressions turning to panic as they looked up, wide-eyed with terror.
"Take cover!" someone shrieked, and chaos erupted in the marketplace. The bird people scattered in every direction, abandoning their stalls and wares. Mothers clutched their children, yanking them away from the danger, while others simply stood frozen in shock, unable to tear their eyes away from the sight of Gabbi hurtling toward them.
Gabbi’s fear escalated as she saw the spot where she would inevitably crash. Her mind screamed in denial, but there was nothing she could do. The ground was coming too fast, and she was powerless to stop it.
"By the gods, I’m going to die!" she thought, covering her face with her hands, unwilling to watch her final moments.
She braced herself for the impact, for the pain that would inevitably follow. But instead of the crushing blow she expected, she felt something else entirely. Strong arms wrapped around her mid-fall, yanking her out of her freefall and slamming her into a hard chest."oof," The force of the impact knocked the breath out of her, and Gabbi gasped, her lungs burning from the sudden compression.
But even through the discomfort, it was better than dying.
