A Fae female dashed out of her home, clutching her child to her chest, her frantic screams piercing the air as she fled from a pack of goblins.
The twisted green creatures, their skin mottled and leathery, let out high-pitched crackles as they gained on her, their long, spindly limbs propelling them with disturbing speed.
Her heart pounded in her chest as panic surged through her. She could barely focus on where she was going, the only thought running through her mind was escape.
Her husband had died only moments ago, struck down in a desperate attempt to hold off the monsters when they first breached the city. He had told her to hide, and she had done so, retreating into a secret room behind a wardrobe in their small home. She had clutched her child tightly, trying to stay as quiet as possible, hoping the creatures would pass by.
But goblins were clever and persistent, known for sniffing out hiding places and using their crude magic to track down their prey. They found her.
Now, she ran for her life, but she knew it was only a matter of time before they caught her. Goblins might be small, but they were fast, and their cruel laughter echoed in her ears like a death knell.
She cast a glance over her shoulder, her stomach dropping when she saw they were closing the distance between them. This was a nightmare she wished she could wake up from.
Just hours ago, the city of Astaria had been peaceful, the streets filled with the usual hustle and bustle as Fae went about their duties. The ones who hadn’t gone to the arena placed bets and boasted about the upcoming death duel between the princes.
There were arguments, annoyance and laughter, until portals suddenly opened across different locations in the city and the invasion began.
Tamry Forest was a place of legend and horror. Monsters, long thought to be nothing more than bedtime stories meant to scare children into good behavior, had poured into the city, attacking without mercy.
The goblins might not be the strongest but they were feared because of their cruel intelligence and ability to swarm their enemies in overwhelming numbers making them deadly foes.
The barrier that had held them prisoner for God knows how long had crumbled, leaving them all vulnerable.
"Help me!" the Fae female screamed, throwing a desperate burst of fire at the goblins behind her.
It struck the first line of the creatures, and they fell with shrieks of pain, but it did little to slow the rest of the pack. They simply stepped over their fallen comrades, their hunger for her life undiminished.
She skidded to a stop, realizing too late that she had been herded. Ahead of her, another swarm of goblins was closing in, blocking her path. To her horror, she realized that they were coordinating, working together in some kind of hive mind to trap her. They had her cornered.
The woman spun around, her breath catching in her throat as she saw goblins coming from all sides, their twisted grins growing wider as they sensed victory.
