In a village less than a yard from Thorneville, all the villagers were kneeling on the ground, and before them stood heavily armed Gloam Wing soldiers, their eyes roaming over the villagers as if they were merely objects.
In front of the villagers lay several mangled bodies, the sight of which kept the others kneeling in fear, afraid that any movement would turn them into the next victims of those guns.
"These people were subordinates of the notorious Matthew Larson. They secretly conspired to plant Night Vine, which is why we had to kill them," Kurtis said, his voice filled with a righteous tone as he addressed the villagers. Of course, if they weren't kneeling, his words might have seemed more credible.
"However, all your crops this year—wheat, fruits, and vegetables—could be cross-contaminated with Night Vine. So, we need to take them all back for testing. You don't have any objections, do you?" Though framed as a question, it was clearly a threat.
"Sir, if you take all our food, what will our families eat? Please, we beg you, we can't survive without these crops," an elderly man pleaded, clutching Kurtis' leg as tears streamed down his wrinkled face.
The villagers were all gaunt and malnourished, relying on that year's harvest to make it through. These crops were their lifeline.
Kurtis' face twisted with impatience. He kicked the old man to the ground, shouting angrily, "You old fool, do you think I care about your complaints? What will you eat? I saw some gravy in your house—eat that!"
The old man's head hit a rock as he fell, blood immediately seeping from the wound. The villagers, still kneeling, could only look on with hatred in their eyes.
