As dawn broke over Hulwin, Mortimer arrived in full military regalia. He wasted no time before approaching Matthew with a concerned expression.
"Matthew, what's going on? Your message sounded urgent."
Matthew, however, appeared unruffled. "Easy there, old friend. Let's not rush on an empty stomach. We'll talk after breakfast." He led Mortimer to a nearby cafe, where they settled down, each with a bowl of steaming breakfast chowder.
As Matthew took a bite of his doughnut, he leaned forward, lowering his voice a little. "Did you catch yesterday's news? Dornia's announced the formation of a chamber of commerce. They're set to start investing in Montiria within three days."
"Yeah, I heard," Mortimer mumbled through a mouthful of breadstick. "Isn't that… supposed to be a good thing?"
Mortimer finally gulped down the last of his breadstick with some effort, then took a deep breath. He had rushed over from Southaven in the dead of night after receiving Matthew's cryptic message, expecting a crisis. Yet here they were, enjoying a leisurely breakfast. Feeling slightly miffed, he waved over the server again.
"Another glass of soy milk and three eggs, please!" he demanded.
Matthew couldn't help but chuckle at Mortimer's voracious appetite. It was partly his fault. He should have explained better before making him rush all the way here.
"Mortimer, one egg is enough for me," Matthew said.
Mortimer paused momentarily, then glanced back at the server and amended, "Alright, make it four eggs."
Matthew's smile faltered slightly as he realized he had the wrong idea.
…
"Surely, they can't do it alone," Matthew explained calmly. "But what if they had some help?" He pulled out his phone and showed Mortimer a photo of Garrett, the Third Prince of Montiria, standing in a tailored suit at the center of a press conference.
Mortimer's eyes widened further. "Wait, are you saying Garrett has already allied with those financial magnates from Dornia?"
Matthew nodded gravely. "Garrett's ultimate goal has always been the throne of Montiria. If he can cause the Ducat to devalue, the situation for the common people will deteriorate further. They’re already suffering under the Gloam Wing Secret Service. Now, add hyperinflation into the mix. The anger among the populace would surely reach a boiling point."
Matthew's face darkened, his lips curling into a sardonic smile. "And then, imagine at the height of their suffering, Garrett steps forward, raises his arm, and proclaims, 'Heaven has fallen; a new order must rise! Gadel is incompetent, blinded by corrupt ministers. Today, I will restore Montiria to its former glory!'"
He leaned back, his tone dripping with irony. "His followers, lying in wait, would rally behind him instantly. Now, tell me, Mortimer, what do you think will happen to Montiria's government? Will it not fall into chaos?"
