Mr. Burns Is Killing His Wife novel Chapter 12

Chapter 12 - Reaping the Rewards of Others' Labor

The spacious room suddenly became very quiet, so quiet that Lila could hear the sound of Hamish flicking off ashes from his cigarette. Little sparks of fire dropped from his fingertips.

Lila rarely saw Hamish smoking, or more accurately, Hamish rarely smoked in front of her because he was considerate of her poor health.

A sudden unease rose in Lila's heart. She had been quite happy earlier today when she inadvertently saw the text messages on Hamish's phone last night.

Elisa was going to divorce Hamish.

Lila also knew that Hamish had gone to see Elisa this morning. Lila had thought he couldn't wait to get divorced, but judging by his gloomy appearance now, it didn't seem to be what she had imagined.

"Hamish, dinner is ready." Lila tried her best to rouse her spirits and reassured herself not to be afraid. She was the one Hamish had loved for so many years, not that arrogant and domineering Elisa who could snatch him away.

Brought back to his senses, Hamish put out the cigarette in his hand and came to the dinner table to see the dishes Lila had prepared.

In such a short time she had made three dishes and one soup, with meat and vegetables, and the presentation was not bad either. But compared to Elisa's cooking, it still lacked something.

Why did he think of that woman again? Hamish clenched his back molars, trying to squeeze her image out of his mind.

Lila sat across from him, eating small mouthfuls from her bowl, glancing at him from time to time. Several times she moved her lips as if wanting to say something, but ultimately didn't speak.

She felt uneasy and afraid in her heart, afraid to ask anything in case the truth was completely different from what she hoped for. She was afraid of disappointment.

Lila was a timid, cowardly woman. Her only ambition in life was focused on Hamish - she wanted Hamish to marry her.

Today Hamish was distracted, even when eating his mind frequently wandered. Lila noticed it several times. Finally, unable to restrain herself, she put down her bowl and asked, "Hamish, how did it go with Elisa today when you went back to see her?"

A man with handsome features, even his hands were exceptionally elegant. Holding his chopsticks, every movement while eating was extremely refined. Upon hearing Lila's question, there was a slight pause in Hamish's actions. "How did what go?"

Lila gently bit her lower lip, stammering, "I mean about you divorcing Elisa today."

As soon as she finished speaking, she felt the man's gaze turn cold across from her. Her body was as if doused by a bucket of icy water. Lila couldn't help but shudder, her eyes filled with timidity.

Seemingly noticing her fear, Hamish softened his gaze and said, "The divorce is off."

Was it Elisa who called it off or did Hamish not want the divorce? Lila preferred to believe it was the former.

"Hamish, you and Elisa are the real married couple. I'm at most just your mistress. I used to really hate the 'third party', but I never imagined there would be a day I became the kind of person I hate the most, stealing another woman's husband and even her blood."
