Euan looked at Riley before he answered. He wanted to see her reaction, but she didn’t have any reaction at all. She had no emotions on her face and was just lying lazily against the head of the bed, closing her eyes as if she was going to sleep soon.
Euan grasped the phone with his slender finger, “I’ll talk to you again.”
He was tired of dealing with the tedious issues at home, especially when it was about Lydia and Riley.
Lydia was easy to please. As long as you give her something she would be pleased, especially with new handbags. She was a gentle person and would be a good mascot for the George family for a long time.
But Riley was an independent woman, and he didn’t need to do anything for her.
Sometimes he would worry about her and would put his all into it, but it never felt like enough.
“What do you mean, talk about it later? You are to come home tonight! Lydia is pregnant, she’s very emotional right now and any extreme emotions can bring harm to the baby. You are the father and you have to be responsible!”
The child. It was about the child again.
He couldn’t comprehend. If Lydia wasn’t pregnant, she would be nothing in Anika’s eyes.
“I’m busy, I’m not returning today,” replied Euan with a hint of annoyance.
“I don’t care, come back immediately, Euan. Lydia is my daughter-in-law. You guys have been together for so many years and she had suffered a lot because of that woman named Riley. She’s pregnant and you still want to let her suffer? Even if you can let that happen, I won’t let it slide! Sign your divorce papers right now. Even if you don’t, I’ll just announce that Lydia is your official wife!”
Riley could hear everything, and she knew that Anika was serious about it.
Anika was an impressive person. She was already an impressive person 20 years ago as she shocked the world by wholly covering up the huge scandal surrounding the George family.
Euan frowned, “I’m overseas and I cannot go back. Talk to you later.”
He then hung up the phone.
Riley opened her eyes and saw that Euan was feeling awkward and unhappy, “You should go back. Your mother sounds angry.”
“She’s your mother-in-law and you’re my wife. That’s a fact.” He announced her identity overbearingly, not letting her escape.
Riley wanted to laugh, “I heard your conversation on the phone. Anika would only accept Lydia as your wife. Euan, we should really…”
Divorce.
He wasn’t going to let her say that word and interrupted her, “I’ll tell them that I’m temporarily not in the JD City and hence I cannot go home tonight. I cannot go back to the villa and not only for tonight, probably for several nights.”
Riley clenched her fist that was resting on the blanket, “So you…”
“The wardroom is shabby looking, but the bed is huge. I’ll stay here tonight.”
Riley said, “…you want to stay here?”
“Why? You don’t want your husband to accompany you? Or are you waiting for Mr. Hardesty?” said Euan snappily, not giving Riley a chance to retort.
But she didn’t mean it like that. She just wanted to tell him that the environment in the hospital wasn’t the best. He who was used to living in luxurious mansions wouldn’t feel comfortable living here.
“There are no toiletries provided here,” she said after pausing for a long time, a familiar string of words.
“That’s not important,” he answered plainly.
Fine. If he didn’t mind it, she wouldn’t push it any further.
Though, Euan made Elijah get him a set of toiletries in the end.
Riley looked at the bathroom in the VIP wardroom. Euan was freshening himself up. She was angry yet she wanted to laugh. Just a few seconds ago they were fighting like cats and dogs and now they were going to spend the night together peacefully? It was a huge turn of events.
She felt sleepy and tucked herself to bed, unable to resist the heaviness of her eyelids.
After showering, Euan put on pyjamas and slid into the bed that smelled like disinfectant.
Riley could feel the warmth from her back, and she tensed up. Euan’s warmth and scent surrounded her and filled every breath she took!
Euan hugged her shoulder from the back with his strong arms. Riley was shocked and was now awake, she almost jumped out of the bed. He pressed her down as if he knew that it was going to happen.
“You, what are you doing?” Her voice was trembling.
He used to do something bad in the past and she was traumatized.
Euan had insomnia and had put in his every ounce of effort to rescue her today. And then he had to deal with some family issues. He was exhausted, spent the whole time worrying and pushed his body to the limit. He didn’t even eat much the whole time. He was strong but he was still human in the end.
He was utterly exhausted.
“Don’t worry, I’m not interested in someone sick,” he said brusquely, but his hands and his actions were scarily gentle.
So gentle that it was so unfamiliar and was eating Riley alive.
Riley’s barricade was softened by his gentleness and she talked more gently, “The smell of alcohol in the hospital is quite strong, but you’ll get used to it.”
He answered with a humph and inched closer to her back, like a pouting child seeking attention. He pressed his chin against her neck and couldn’t pick up any other scent such as the disinfectant but only the sweet smell of shampoo from her hair.
Her breathing started to hasten, she gritted her teeth and asked, “Are you cold?”
He was hugging her so tightly and it was getting way too warm. Did he have a fever?
It was not just warm, it was burning!
Euan moved his arms between the sheets and grabbed her waist. He made her turn around and face him. He didn’t like that her back was facing him.
Riley’s heart started to beat fast facing him so directly. She looked at Euan in a daze, bit her lips and didn’t say anything.
Euan looked at her and was hugging her, “I am regretful.”
Riley blinked repeatedly and asked, “About what?”
Euan took a deep breath, “I should’ve made the incident about your kidnapping known.”
He should’ve made it public, causing a huge uproar in the city and made it the headline news.
Not shouldering it all alone and now only two of them knew about it.
Riley was taken aback.
Before she could say something, he said, “If the incident was known, your identity as my wife would be known as well. All rumours would have collapsed by themselves and you couldn’t flirt with Mr. Hardesty openly anymore.”
She was feeling touched at first, but what the heck was he talking about in the end?
