"Silent at meals, silent at sleep," the old Simpson's voice was stiff and cold, shutting Ayan up with just a few words.
The atmosphere that followed was very quiet, and the two of them remained silent as they finished their meal.
After dinner, Ayan personally brewed tea and poured it into a cup, presenting it to the old Simpson. "Grandfather, try this!!"
It was a new tea he had brought with him, as the old Simpson liked to drink tea. However, due to his hospitalization and medication, he seldom had the chance to drink it. Naturally, he was delighted, and his expression revealed a hint of gentleness.
After drinking the tea, Ayan took the initiative to continue the conversation, speaking in a very gentle tone. "Grandfather, you asked me to come here. Is there something you want to tell me?"
The topic was getting straight to the point, and the two locked eyes once again.
The old Simpson appeared expressionless, but a hint of gravity and gloom flashed in his cloudy eyes, and his voice was hoarse. "Haven't you already guessed why I went to the police station?"
Ayan smiled and maintained his tone, with a slight hint of amusement in his voice. "Grandfather, if you don't tell me, how could I guess?"
"It's just the two of us here, there's no need for pretenses." The old Simpson shot Ayan a disapproving look.
Ayan also smiled and spoke in a low voice. "Grandfather, I don't quite understand your meaning. If you want to tell me that you went to the police station with my father, then yes, I do know that. But I don't know why you went to the police station."
"Grandfather, can you tell me why you went to the police station?"
Ayan narrowed his eyes, gazing at the old Simpson with a mild smile and a scrutinizing look that made it impossible to hide.
But the person in front of him was the old Simpson, who naturally did not display any extreme emotions. Instead, he stared back at Ayan, his voice low and deep. "Are you questioning me?"
"Of course not, grandfather. This is not an interrogation. Didn't you ask me here for dinner to tell me about this?" Ayan's gaze remained fixed on the old Simpson, with a hint of smile in his eyes. He continued, "If you didn't plan on telling me, you wouldn't have asked me to come today, would you?"
In fact, the old Simpson did not want Ayan to investigate. If the old Simpson pretended to know nothing, Ayan's personality would surely lead him to thoroughly investigate until he uncovered the truth.
So it was impossible for the old Simpson not to be honest.
Ayan's demeanor let the old Simpson know that he was in control. This put the old Simpson in a very conflicting mood, which lasted for a while. It was probably due to some inner struggle because the matter was too grave. The old Simpson did not want more people to know, otherwise he would not have hidden it for so many years.
