Chapter 44 Impertinence
Daniel poured Amanda a cup of tea as soon as he arrived at the lounge. As the general manager’s secretary, Amanda was somebody he could not afford to offend.
“I apologize for the misunderstanding that angered you earlier, Ms. Clark,” Daniel said respectfully with a cup of tea in both hands.
He did not bother himself with a second glance at Christopher. Atop the stage earlier, he had to feign cordiality, but once they were away from the public eye, he did not need to anymore as his identity spoke for itself.
I am the manager of Centurion Corporation! Why should I lower myself for a veteran?
Amanda laughed grimly to herself. It was not me that he offended but Christopher, the actual boss. If he knew who Christopher was, he would probably regret it.
Of course, Amanda had the option to hand Daniel directly to the police. After all, the three million in bribes on top of prior offenses was enough to sentence Daniel to death.
Instead of pursuing that course of action, though, Amanda had Daniel come over as well so that Christopher could deal with him. After all, she had felt her employer’s anger through his phone call earlier.
Daniel was the first person to have dared cast aside the boss’ proposal.
Even Amanda was in awe of his bravado.
“Bring the contract for Mr. Yaeger’s signature, Mr. Davis.” Ignoring his apology, Amanda gave the order coldly.
Daniel heaved a mental sigh of relief. At least Amanda was not blaming him.
Without further ado, he went inside to fetch the contract. Though Daniel was unhappy with Christopher, he reluctantly handed it to him. “Hey you, here’s your contract. Take it. I don’t know what the hell happened for you to end up getting the partnership with us. You must think you are a big shot now, boy.”
“What kind of attitude is this? Is this how you treat your contracted partners?” Christopher said sharply, his features twisting into a scowl.
I haven’t even settled the score of Daniel throwing my proposal into the trash can before my eyes, and here he is with another preemptive attack.
Daniel had always hated Christopher. He wondered how the latter had managed to induce Amanda to change her mind, emboldening Christopher to such an extent that he was now throwing his weight around.
He must have a death wish!
“Do you know who you are talking to?” Daniel snapped.
“If this is how you choose to behave, Mr. Davis, I will not be signing the contract!” Christopher declared with cold hostility as he slid the contract aside.
Daniel was stunned in an instant.
Is Christopher threatening me by withholding his signature? I am the manager of Centurion Corporation. It has always been others begging me, not the other way around!
Moreover, he never wanted Christopher to become a partner of Centurion Corporation in the first place. If Christopher sought trouble, Daniel was not to be blamed for the consequences.
“You’re refusing to sign the contract?” Daniel shouted angrily, “Who do you think you are? To be able to call Centurion Corporation your corporate partner is entirely your honor! Ms. Clark, I have had people investigate this punk. He is just a veteran, and the Murray family has little to no potential. I think we shouldn’t sign the contract with him.”
He was under the impression that the army veteran was taking advantage of his newfound position. Even if Amanda knew Christopher personally, she would not dare to be impartial when the company’s interests were at stake.
After all, Julianna Corporation was an abysmal performer on the market. Any other company would have been a better choice.
Daniel was not worried about the matter reaching Diane’s ears. If Diane dared favor her secretary, that would only cause the dissatisfaction of the other managers.
“I suggest being more polite, Mr. Davis. Otherwise, you will be the one who will suffer.” Christopher did not conceal his sneer.
Daniel’s temper flared up. “Suffer?” he yelled. “No one has ever spoken to me like this in all my years in Centurion Corporation. Who do you think you are? How dare you threaten me? I will have security throw you out!”
“Who do I think I am? I am your boss, the chairman of Centurion Corporation. Is this reason enough?”
