My Hunted Mate novel Chapter 49

Corinna

As I slowly begin to gain back some consciousness, a sharp ringing noise pierces my ears causing me to cup them with weak hands, trying some how to protect myself against the noise, but I quickly realise the ringing is due to the effects of the wolfsbane, not a genuine noise from around me.

My senses are dulled and hazy as I take in my surroundings, making everything spin, blur and distort. My hair feels damp from the sweat that pumps from my body, that is doing it's very best to fight off the poison in my system.

An uncontrollable cough escapes past my lips, a splatter of deep red, almost black blood lands on the mattress under me, adding to the endless amounts of stains that already coat the material.

Trying my best to force myself into a sitting position, everything once again begins to spin but I can barely pay attention to that as my eyes fall on the blood seeping through the grey sweatpants covering my legs, my heart clenches with pain and anxiety.

This is not happening.

This cannot be happening.

My own loud, heart broken sobs are far away to my ears as I desperately crawl off of the mattress and toward the staircase. When I reach the bottom of the stairs, my weak arms collapse from under me and I pant heavily but still continue to try and shake off the exhaustion.

Darting my hand out in front of me, I clench my fingers around the banister as tightly as I can for support and start to pull myself up the stairs. After what feels like hours, I finally make it to the top.

Pushing myself to sit up, I lean against the door as I reach for the handle to swing the door open, once I do, I collapse again but this time onto the dark hardwood floor in the hallway of the house.

My breathing by now is uncontrollable and my clothes cling to my body uncomfortably due to the amount of sweat my body is producing. My eyes start to feel heavy as I lay on the cool wood of the floor, but I blink roughly trying to force them to stay open.

Another loud sob escapes my lips, as I hear the echo of footsteps coming toward me. I lift my eyes just as the witch who took my gifts stops in front of me, he sends me a mocking grin as he squats down beside me.

As he opens his mouth to speak, a stick comes flying through the air and impales him right through his throat. Blood gushes from the wound and his mouth, his eyes are wide and looking behind me where the front door is.
