Upon hearing Selene's words, Esther looked at her, a sudden question forming in her mind. Could it be true that this elegant and composed woman had never thought about getting a divorce?
"The Pendleton men have always been unpredictable, and my son is no different." Selene continued. "He might be infatuated with you for a while, showering you with attention. But once the novelty wears off, he'll be attracted to other interests.
"You must now secure your position, stay composed, and understand your role."
Selene handed a notebook about the Pendletons' social interactions to Esther, her tone chilly. "Go through this notebook thoroughly. The butler handles everything else in the household, but as the future lady of the Pendletons, you must memorize every detail, learn to command, and take charge."
Esther accepted the notebook with both hands, her anxiety evident as she asked, "Can I?"
"What do you think?" Selene rose and summoned a maid. "Shelly, accompany her to the bedroom."
Shelly asked, "Madam, the young master's bedroom or..."
Selene replied, "The guest room."

Esther sat at the desk in the guest room, skimming through Selene's notebook. She turned the pages one by one, feeling the cold sweat on her brow. Selene was even more formidable than she had expected.
She feared that Selene might test her, so she had no choice but to read the notebook attentively. She was so engrossed in her reading she didn't notice the evening slowly approaching.
The long-lasting Pendletons had trained and nurtured many individuals. Apart from professional gardeners tending to the home garden, service staff was responsible for mowing and fertilizing.
Despite the butler's various household tasks, Selene still knew everything by heart.
The sound of a gentle knock on the door roused Esther.
"Please come in."
Shelly entered quietly and said in a hushed tone, "Dinner will be served in ten minutes."
