In Coravela, Hesperia, Marcus had just gone to bed after experiencing a severe anxiety attack. It was almost 4 am, and Frederick had to take him for a walk along the beach to help him calm down. Just as Marcus was beginning to drift into an uneasy sleep, the light from his phone caught his attention.
“Mr. Bartz…”
“Who’s calling?”
This is Darius Richarde
attorney and representative of Mr. Peter Palmer.”
Marcus sat up abruptly, his instincts screaming that something was wrong. Peter wouldn’t have given out his personal number unless it was an emergency. A chill ran down Marcus’s spine.
“This is him. What’s happened?”
“Sir, it’s imperative that you come to Galea, Valentia.
“What happened to Peter? Tell me, what’s going on?” Marcus demanded, gripping his forehead with one hand as a headache began to build.
“Sir… Mr. Peter Palmer was involved in a car accident Unfortunately, he… he didn’t survive.”
The phone slipped from Marcus’s hand, clattering to the floor. He fell to his knees, his vision blurring as he fumbled to pick up the phone again.
“Frederick… Frederick… Frederick!” Marcus cried out, his voice breaking with desperation.
Frederick rushed in and picked up the phone, steadying Marcus’s trembling body as he answered.
“This is Frederick Sanders. Who’s speaking?”
“This is Darius Richards, attorney for Mr. Peter Palmer. I regret to inform you that Peter was killed in a car accident. Mr. Bartz is the only one authorized to make decisions regarding Mr. Palmer’s estate. It’s urgent that he comes to Galea immediately.”
“Could you repeat what happened?” Frederick asked, his deep, raspy voice shaking slightly.
“Mr. Peter Palmer passed away in a car accident. According to the police report, his vehicle veered off the road and went down a ravine.”
“Has his family been informed?” Frederick asked, wrapping an arm around Marcus, who was still in shock
“No, sir. You’re the first to know. The police are on their way to Mr. Palmer’s residence, where his current partner is staying. They’ll need someone to identify the-”
“No! Don’t let them speak to her!” Frederick interrupted. “She’s pregnant. This news could harm her and the baby.”

them. But Mr. Bartz must arrive as soon as possible.”
Hearing this, Marcus snapped out of his daze, as if someone had poured cold water over him. He stood abruptly, his expression turning icy and resolute.

“Get the plane ready to leave in 30 minutes!” Marcus Barked as he marched toward his closet.
Though moments ago he had been paralyzed with fear Marcus now forced himself into action. There was no room for grief–not yet. He had to move quickly and think clearly.
Frederick hung up and called the pilot, informing him of the urgent departure.
“Captain, this is a long flight, and I need to arrange several authorizations for departure-”
“Then do it! That’s what the Palmers pay you for! We need to be in Valentia by sunrise!” Frederick roared.
“Sir, I understand, but permissions take time
“Call the governor! Whatever it takes, we’re leaving now.”
“Yes, sir. The governor has been informed and is expediting everything. But once in Valentia, I’ll need to coordinate your security.”

us to Galea. Peter was my friend, and I won’t abandon him. Do you understand?”
Meanwhile, in Galea, it was 9:00 p.m., and Peter still hadn’t arrived home. Mary was growing increasingly worried. Normally, Peter avoided driving at night, and her unease was beginning to manifest physically. She clutched her chest, feeling tightness that made her breath catch.
“Ma’am, calm down,” Agnes, her housekeeper, reassured her. “I’m sure Mr. Peter has a good reason for being late. Maybe he stayed to chat with Calum. I’ll look up his number in the address book and call him.”
“Agnes, I don’t feel well. My hips hurt. I think it’s just the stress…” Mary murmured.
“What exactly are you feeling, ma’am?”
“My lower back aches,” she replied, pointing to the spot.
“Ma’am, please sit down and try to relax. These sound like cramps or contractions, but it’s too early for the baby.
“Oh, Agnes… I just want Peter to come home. I don’t like this feeling. It’s like a knot in my stomach, and it’s rising to my throat. Could you bring me a glass of water?
“Yes, ma’am. But please, calm down–or I’ll have to call an ambulance.”
“Why do my legs feel so weak? This morning I felt fine…”
“It’s because you’re worried. Remember, Mr. Peter knows how to take care of himself. Maybe there’s traffic or an accident blocking the road. Did you try calling him?”
“Yes! Several times, but it goes straight to voicemail…
“Lie down on the sofa. I’ll grab the address book and call Calum,” Agnes said, heading to the kitchen for

As she was filling the glass, her phone rang. Recognizing the number immediately, her stomach dropped. Before working for Peter, she had been employed by Marcus Bartz and his family. The house they now lived in had once been Marcus’s, but he had sold it after tragedy struck, unable to bear the
