After the couple left the bar, the atmosphere between the remaining two shifted dramatically. The cordiality they had shown each other evaporated. It was clear they’d been forcing themselves to get along, but for Maximus, being around Alexia was enough to give him a headache.
“Maximus, did you already know about all of this?”
“No, I just found out,” he replied, sounding distracted
“That wretched woman! Wasn’t she supposed to be gone? Vanished? Or… I don’t know,” Alexia said furiously.
“Well, I’m glad to hear she’s doing okay,” Maximus sald, fixing his gaze on his wife.
“What? Have you forgotten how much Grandma Catherine suffered when she left?” Alexia snapped, her eyes blazing with anger.
“Since when do you care about what my grandmother felt?” Maximus shot back. “As far as I remember, you never worried about her. After she handed the company back to me, you never visited her. So don’t talk to me about pain when you weren’t even there. Besides, if Mary is back, it means my niece will be here too. I need to meet her, talk to her, and give her what’s rightfully hers.”
“Maximus! I’ve already told you, that belongs to OUR children!”
“Alexia, could you sit down and stop yelling? I’ve already explained. I’ve always looked for

“By the way, why did you change clothes? What on earth are you trying to do, Alexia? Were you planning to seduce that man? Let me remind you–you’re not a young girl anymore. Oh, and one more thing: I’m leaving for Madrid tomorrow. I need to finalize the deal with the Andaloza family company for the energy project, so I’ll be gone all week.
‘Starting Monday, Marcus Bartz will take over as Director of Finance. So start wrapping up all your tasks, and if there’s anything you don’t want him to see, you’d better hide it well”
“What the hell are you talking about? You know I manage both finance and sales!” Alexia exclaimed, her face a mix of surprise and panic.
“Well, Marcus Bartz is taking over that department, and he’s not asking for permission. If he wants to do it, he will, and there’s nothing I can do to stop him Tie up your loose ends, and I expect you to calmly hand him a summary of the company’s current status
“And don’t even think about trying to outsmart him. He’s not the kind of man you want to mess with.
Maximus stood up, downed his glass of whiskey in one gulp, and walked out, leaving Alexia in shock.
She had thought she was rid of Mary, but now the situation was much worse. Mary was under the protection of Bartz, the majority shareholder of Palmer Group, and he was coming to take her position.
The streak of luck Alexia had enjoyed so far was running out, and that realization made her nervous. She thought about how, even now, she and Maximus were only together because of their children. If Mary
