Chapter 0507
He took a sip of his drink before continuing. “Love can’t be forced. I loved her–it’s obvious. I don’t even know when it started. Maybe I loved her from the first time she stayed with me. Maybe I made mistakes and hurt her too. Even when we were together, I knew that you, Maximus, would always be a part of our lives because of Serenity.
“Lies have short legs, and sooner or later, her connection to you would have come to light. You would’ve returned to her life, and it would’ve been a never–ending cycle.
“But with Marcus… Marcus was my friend, and he’s not a bad man. He’s suffered greatly, and if he chose to marry Mary, it was for life. I know him, and I know that’s how he is. He loved his first wife deeply, and now, I can see he loves Mary just as much. What bothers me, though, is the fear in his eyes–as if he believes I’m going to show up and take her away from him.”
Maximus chuckled bitterly. “If I had ended up married to Mary and you appeared, I can’t imagine our brotherly relationship surviving that.”
“Exactly,” Peter replied. “Now do you see why I refuse to go looking for her?”
“If I were you, I’d find her,” Maximus said, leaning forward. “At least to close the chapter.”
“It’s not that simple,” Peter said, his voice growing firm. “Believe me, I’ve thought about it countless times. But anyway, Maximus, I came out for a drink with you, and here I am driving your car, taking you home, while you keep asking me questions, You’re the one with urgent matters to handle. Congratulations, Grandpa!”
“You’re an idiot! Did you know that?” Maximus shot back.
“No more than you, dear brother…”
Maximus’s tone softened as he sighed. “What more can I do? You hit the nail on the head–I love my daughter, my little girl. She’s my blood, and I’ll help her, protect her, and guide her. Honestly, I’d prefer if that bastard didn’t step up to the plate, because I’m not ready to let go of my little girl yet.”
After a few more minutes of driving, Peter pulled into the Palmer estate. He helped Maximus out of the car, slinging his brother’s arm over his shoulder to steady him as they made their way inside. The new butler opened the door and directed Peter to Maximus’s bedroom. Once there, Peter removed his brother’s coat and shoes, ensuring he was comfortable before leaving the room.
Before heading out, Peter asked the butler about Laura. The butler informed him she was in her room, and Peter requested to speak with her. The butler nodded and went to fetch her.
A few minutes later, a timid Laura entered the living room, her pale features and blonde hair catching the dim light. She sat hesitantly on one of the sofas, avoiding Peter’s gaze.
“Hello, Laura,” Peter greeted warmly.
“Uncle…” she replied softly.
“I brought your father home. Take good care of him–he’s not doing well right now.”
“Is it because of me? How is he? What did he say?” Laura asked, her voice trembling.
“He said you’re going to be a mom.”
Tears welled up in Laura’s eyes as she whispered, “I didn’t want to disappoint my father. I… I just got away. I’m so in love with my boyfriend, and I know he loves me too…”

“Laura,” Peter said gently, “sometimes love isn’t enough. Right now, you feel secure in this life, but if you ever lose that security, life won’t seem so easy. You need to be aware of your actions and understand that your father- hardheaded as he is–loves you deeply. You matter to him, like any daughter matters to her father.”
