The phone ceased ringing after a few moments and was automatically disconnected, Candice
took her phone and exited the kitchen.
Yana queried. “You’re not having any soup?”
“No, thanks,” Candice responded. In reality, she hadn’t eaten dinner that night, and her stomach felt a little uneasy, but she lacked the appetite to eat.
Over at the Southern Gin Hotel, the Aether Corporation’s party had just wrapped up.
Helen scoffed bitterly with the phone in her hand. She asked, “Are you happy now?”
Alex sat across from her. His eyes were icy, and his expression was unreadable. He countered,”
Are you pleased, mother?”
Despite being in her early fifties, Helen took good care of herself and maintained a youthful
appearance.
“Don’t forget that I’m your mother,” she said, dismissively looking at Alex.
“Can’t I manage your property for you? I told you I wouldn’t let her marry into our family, and I
meant it. I know exactly what you’re planning!”
“You’re truly your father’s son,” Helen said as she pointed at Alex. “Both are drawn to lower–status
women.”
“Helen!” Daniel entered the room unexpectedly. As he stared at Helen, his demeanor was stern,
and he warned, “You need to stop!”
Helen snorted dismissively, “Daniel I respect you in public, but let’s not forget how you got to
where you are today.”
Alex observed their tense exchange and appeared to be used to it.
Helen and Daniel’s never–ending argument persisted.
In a heated moment, Helen pointed at Alex and exclaimed, “Look at your wonderful son, drawn to
trash, just like you. You two are equally stupid!”
Alex stood up expressionlessly. His cold gaze swept over them, his voice frosty as he stated, “I
simply detest others interfering with my affairs. Nothing more.”
His mood was off, and he exuded a keep–away vibe.

Sonia felt anxious witnessing this.
She had deliberately stayed after the party, hoping to catch Alex’s attention and possibly impress
his parents.
Despite Helen’s unfavorable attitude toward her, Sonla knew Helen had Initially disliked Candice but eventually tolerated her. Sonia believed that if Candice could do it, so could she.
She tried to link arms with Alex with a hopeful smile, but he skillfully avoided her.
Confused, Sonia called out, “What’s the matter?”
Alex halted, turning his somber eyes toward Sonia.
Seeing her slight distress, he softly said, “I’ve got something on my mind.”
Then he added, “I’ll drive you home.”
Sonia nodded, her head bowed.
Alex had a habit of driving her home no matter the hour. Sonia had hinted at more with Alex, but
he had always insisted it wasn’t the right time.
Candice set her alarm for six the next morning. Despite Hanley’s willingness to help, she couldn’t
just wait passively for a result.
She reached the Southern Gin Hotel before seven, with the streets still quiet, and parked at the hotel’s entrance. She had learned from Dr. Brooks that Chad would leave for the hospital around 8:

Candice brought a piece of bread with her. As she bit into it, Yvonne’s daily message about the
debt arrived.
At this point, Yvonne’s messages were indistinguishable from spam.
She intended to pay the half–million, but not immediately.

Yvonne repeatedly threatened that if Ivor didn’t he would sell Peach.
Candice had asked about it, and Greg had replied that Peach was currently hospitalized and being
cared for by a nurse.
It wasn’t until she got Yvonne’s call and headed to the bank that she remembered Greg. Alex’s
friend from Noxville.
Candice wasn’t as furious over Yvonne’s deception any longer. She simply wanted Yvonne to stop
bothering Joe.

Promptly at 8:20 a.m., Chad descended to the lobby.
Candice exited her car and approached him, greeting him respectfully and earnestly, “Good
morning, Dr. Sul, I’m Candice. We met yesterday evening.”
Chad gave her a slight frown and responded, “Regarding your grandfather’s condition, I advised
you last night to opt for conservative treatment.”
Candice held Joe’s medical history and some test results as she countered, “I’ve done some
research, and there have been many successful surgeries for his condition.”
Handing over the documents, she urged, “You haven’t yet fully reviewed his case. Could your
please examine these results?”
Chad expressed his displeasure, questioning her motives, “I’m not sure if this is genuinely for you grandfather or just for show, but please don’t waste my time.”
Candice was puzzled. She asked, “What do you mean by “for show‘?”
Chad had a serious look behind his glasses. He eyed Candice with dissatisfaction and stated, “I’m
