Shawn's face contorted with bitterness as he held onto Candice tightly, struggling with a surge of emotions that left him unable to speak.
Candice noticed the disappointment clouding old Mr. Elysian’s eyes, feeling a heavy lump in her chest that made it difficult to breathe.
Jessica quickly grasped the situation and moved to support Shawn, casting an apologetic glance at Candice.
"I'll take him home," Jessica offered. "And as for you—"
Before she could finish, Candice hoarsely interjected, "Yes, grandpa’s health should come first."
With a nod from Jessica, she helped Shawn out of the hospital. Candice was torn as she left, standing there.
As she watched Shawn's stooped figure leave, Candice restrained herself from following. She felt utterly at a loss, unable to find the right words to explain or face old Mr. Elysian.
Yet, as Shawn glanced back at her, his expression aged and worn, she felt the weight on her chest grow heavier. His gaze shifted to her stomach, then back to her face.
After a moment, he sighed quietly and added, "You have such an intense reaction. This worries me. I'll take you home."
His words only intensified the weight in Candice's chest, nearly bringing her to tears.
Given Candice's stare, Shawn sighed again and continued, "This is definitely a shock. You must allow me time to process this. No matter how confused I am, I can't turn a blind eye to
the fact that you're expecting a child now.”
After Shawn learned about her pregnancy, Candice anticipated many reactions, including sadness and detachment, but never this. With her mouth pursed, she seemed at a loss for
words.
A solemn reminder took the place of Jessica's initial surprise.
"Shawn has spoken," she urged. "Don't turn him away. We're heading back anyway."
-
Silence filled the car as they drove.
It wasn't until they reached their destination that Shawn broke the silence with a difficult question. "Can you tell me who the father is?"
Candice hesitated, unable to find the right words.
Seeing her struggle, Shawn relented. "Never mind. Has Alex been informed?"
"Not yet."
Shawn continued to stare at Candice as the car came to a halt, as if he had something to say.
Candice had run out of things to say. She simply thanked him before leaving.
As Candice's slender form receded from view, Shawn observed with a complex gaze that was difficult to decipher.
Jessica sighed, breaking the silence.
"Candice's pregnancy was quite unexpected," she remarked.
Shawn's expression hardened, his breath heavy as he retorted, "That irresponsible fool deserves it! He'll reap what he sows! He'll learn his lesson soon enough!"
Jessica paused, noting, "Candice doesn't seem eager to inform Alex."
"That fool brought this upon himself. Who would want to deal with him?" Shawn's frustration mounted, his anger palpable.
Jessica hurriedly attempted to calm him down. She cautioned, "Don't get angry! Children have their own fortune."
"I would have been better off without them!" Shawn muttered under his breath.
He started to question if there was something wrong with his offspring, even glancing at them drove him mad.
Jessica wasn't sure what else to say. She just told the driver to take Shawn home.
-
Candice anticipated old Mr. Elysian needing time to process the news and was unsure of how long it might take.
The following day, Jessica arrived at Candice's doorstep with two maids carrying supplements.
