Coming out of the doctor's office, Candice's mind was blank. She barely managed to steady herself against the wall to prevent herself from falling.
The words "malformed" kept echoing in her mind.
The fear and confusion welling up from within made her unsure of how to react.
"Don't rush to conclusions." Hanley's calm voice sounded. He gently placed his warm palm on Candice's arm, giving her enough support. "The probability of a malformed fetus isn't that high, and you're very healthy. Maybe the hospital made a mistake, and the doctor just mentioned that the chances of error are high, didn't he ask you to come for a re-examination?"
Instantly encouraged by his words, Candice reached out and held Hanley's hand tightly on her arm, as if grasping a lifeline. She stuttered, "Yes, there's a re-examination... re-examination..."
Looking down at her, Hanley pursed his lips and swallowed. "It's okay, everything will be fine."
A sense of indescribable panic swept over Candice and engulfed her whole body. She tried to move to stand up, but she felt her whole body go weak, as if she would collapse as soon as she exerted any force.
Fortunately, a pair of steady hands supported her shoulders, and Hanley's voice was low. "Don't be afraid, I'm here."
"Okay." She nodded, slowly getting up with his help.
But before she could fully stand up, she heard a voice. "Mr. Elysian..."
Candice looked up and saw Alex standing not far away. Her emotions were so tense that she couldn't clearly see his face.
She blinked and tightened the hand holding onto Hanley's arm, her voice hoarse as she said, "Hanley, I don't have any strength in my body. I can't seem to get up."
Hanley looked up at Alex, his eyes slightly narrowed and emotions churning in the depths of his eyes. But in the end, he sighed softly and gently stroked Candice's shoulder, whispering, "Then let's wait a while before going back."
Originally, Candice was holding onto his arm, and her whole body was leaning toward him. Now, with him patting Candice's shoulder, the two of them appeared even more intimate.
Alex stood not far away, watching. His already deep pupils seemed even darker. He pressed his thin lips tightly together, his well-defined features appearing cold and proud.
His gaze was firmly fixed on Candice and his hands clenched when suddenly his phone rang.
Glancing down, Alex frowned, seeming annoyed.
Soon, he lifted his gaze and looked at the sight of Candice and Hanley leaning against each other, then turned and left.
-
After returning home from the hospital, Candice's condition didn't improve.
Once others found out about this matter, the atmosphere in the entire villa became very dull.
Nadia wanted to come and comfort Candice several times but didn't know what to say. Any mother who suddenly hears that her child might be malformed wouldn't feel good.
Moreover, everyone could tell that although Candice didn't say it outright, she had been looking forward to the birth of the child.
The living room was too quiet. Nadia bit her lip and gestured to Hanley, "Boss, go and comfort Candice."
Hanley lowered his eyes without saying a word.
She urged again, "Hurry up! She must be feeling very sad right now!"
Hanley looked upstairs. Candice had gone straight upstairs after coming back, saying she was tired and wanted to sleep.
But even Nadia could tell that it was an excuse.
Right now, she probably didn't want to see anyone.
