The ward fell silent, and only the sound of Ellis' sobbing could be heard. Alex stiffened, looking down at Ellis, his voice tense and hoarse. "What... what did you just call me?"
Ellis just continued to cry while hugging him, trying to reach out and grab Alex's injured hand, wanting to blow on it.
Alex looked at Candice subconsciously. Candice was obviously also a little stunned, but noticing Alex's gaze, she slowly regained her senses and then looked at Ellis with a complicated gaze.
After a while, she said in a somewhat muffled tone, "If you mind the way she addresses you, I'll get her to change it."
"How could I possibly mind?" Alex now had a surreal feeling, as if he had been hit by a huge surprise. He could not help but smile, and a shimmering light flickered in his dark eyes. He bent down to pick Ellis up, unable to hide his delight, coaxing her softly. "Cupcake, call "Daddy" one more time alright?"
There were still tears on little Ellis' face. She turned around, hugged Alex's neck, buried her face in his shoulder, and her shoulders still shaking with her sobs.
Alex covered her, his low and gentle voice was magnetic, and there was an uncontrollable smile in his voice. "Don't be afraid, don't be afraid, Baby Mulberry, don’t be afraid, Daddy doesn't feel any pain at all."
He raised his hand as he spoke, as if he wanted to tear off the gauze and let Ellis beat him, but was stopped by Candice.
Candice directly took Ellis away from his arms. "I will be discharged from the hospital today, and she will not go to your ward again."
Alex's joyful mood calmed down, and he hummed an acknowledgement. "It's true that you can't stay in the hospital for too long, I..." He was silent for a moment, and then probed. "Can I visit her in the future?"
Candice said nothing, and the disappointment on Alex's face was obvious.
He smiled silently and said, "I understand."
When Alex left, Ellis seemed to want to follow him. She kept twisting and turning in Candice's arms.
Yana looked at Candice's calm face and asked hesitantly. "Don't you mind?"
"Mind what?"
Yana blurted out, "Mulberry called Alex Daddy! I didn't even know when she got so close to him."
Candice lowered her gaze. "Isn't that a good thing?"
"How can it be a good thing—" Yana didn’t understand. Although Alex was Ellis' biological father, when had he ever fulfilled the responsibilities of a father? Yana felt that if it were her, she would never let her child call such a person dad. She wanted to say something to Candice but heard Candice continue.
"Isn't being close to one's parents and receiving their love a good thing?" Candice's tone was calm, as if she really did not think it was a serious matter.
Yana fell silent. She knew about Candice's background. For Candice, perhaps the love of parents was indeed more important than anything else.
So, she never stopped Ellis from interacting with Alex. The things she never possessed, the suffering she had endured, were all things she hoped that Ellis did not have to experience.
Yana sighed, picked up Ellis and rubbed her face. "Did you hear that? Your mother is so good to you."
Ellis shouted softly, "Mommy!" Then she threw herself on Candice.

When Alex returned to the ward, he was still in a very happy mood.
He stretched out his hand to cover his chest, and kept feeling warm there.
Ellis' voice still seemed to be echoing in his ears. She called him daddy...
