I wondered how much time I had until the news that my report was the reason people got fired would spread throughout the entire company. I started thinking that perhaps it would be wiser to hire bodyguards. I could easily handle a few humans by myself, but fighting against an enraged crowd could be troublesome. Certainly, the rational and, this time, optimistic part of my brain told me that I was overreacting and that nothing bad would happen. In normal circumstances, I would expect people to fear me more than openly declare war against me, but my situation was far from normal. I sighed heavily, then got up, getting ready to leave the CFO's office.
"Goodbye, Mr. Foubert." I smiled faintly, walking towards the door.
"See you tomorrow, Ms. Leber." He winked at me teasingly.
I opened the door and bumped into someone.
"I'm sorry, I didn't see you.." I muttered, straightening my nose after it hit that person's hard male chest.
I looked up and saw a pair of cold reddish eyes, glowing like rubies, set in a pale face. The man looked like he was out of this world. With his light blonde hair and whitest of white skin, he could have only been an albino or a vampire. I guessed it was the second. I instinctively stepped back, creating more distance between us.
"Frans, come inside already. Stop staring at my favorite employee," Gabriel called out to the man.
I abruptly stepped aside, letting him into the office. He glared at me while walking inside. I wondered if I should introduce myself, but he didn't seem like a friendly person, so I smiled briefly at him and then dashed to the corridor. As soon as I did, he shut the door.
"What a rude bastard," I muttered and clicked my tongue.
Then I thought that this was vampires' normal attitude towards humans. Even Monique said that they don't get along well with humans. It was almost sundown, so I guess it could have been one of the commoners she mentioned. I shrugged, shaking off my annoyance, and went down to the car. It was time to go and meet the Great Council.
Mike's cheerful mood took my mind off my anxieties concerning my testimony. It made me forget that we weren't going back to the castle. I realized that our destination was different only when he suddenly stopped the car in the middle of nowhere. Then he got out of the car and rushed to open the door for me.
"Mike, why did you stop the car in the middle of a dusty road with nothing but a field and a few trees around?" I asked with a nervous smile, looking around the place shrouded in mist.
"I apologize, Ms. Lilith. This is as far as I can take you. You will have to wait for the Duke's car to go further, but don't worry! They should be here any minute," he claimed, doing his best to sound convincing.
It looked like I had to trust his words. I sighed and got out of the car. He drove away, and I stood on the deserted side road, looking like a bumbling idiot who had lost her way. That was the first moment when I regretted that I didn't have a phone, but then I thought that even if I had a phone here, there would be no reception…
"Mike… if no one is getting to take me away from here fast, I swear I'm going to find you and whoop your ass!" I shouted in frustration after standing there for more than fifteen minutes.
The mist around me was strangely cold. It was autumn, but the early evenings weren't this cold, despite that, I was freezing. Finally, I saw a black car on that empty road. It stopped right next to me. The back seat window opened, and I saw Sariel's face.
"What are you waiting for? Get in!" His commanding voice instantly made my body move towards the backseat door on the other side.
As soon as I was in the car, I sighed in relief. I could have been angry a minute ago, but now I was just happy to sit somewhere where I wouldn't freeze. The driver started the engine. The Duke was sitting beside me in the backseat, whereas Mr. Gotha was sitting in the front passenger's seat. Sariel looked me up and down.
