Nine months too late: After divorce by Baby Charlene novel Chapter 88

Chapter 88
“You ungrateful brat,” she hissed. “After all I did for you, this is how you repay me?”
“Excuse me? What did you do for me?” Lan***d her head to glance at her over her shoulder.
“Are you really-”
“You’re my mother! And it’s your responsibility take care of my needs. Besides, it has always been your idea to ensure I get into the Hawkins family which is why I did all the things I did.”
“You shouldn’t be doing this now, Reb
You need to rest. Let’s go,” her sister urged again.
Rebecca’s heart ached as she watched the daughter she had so much hope in. Watching her relationship with Lana crumble was disheartening, she suddenly felt st***d.
Luckily, they’d been able to win the case and pin everything on the nurse. But Rebecca didn’t feel any better coming home to a family that was now shattered.
She took her sister’s advice-heading for the staircase.
Lana had emptied and refilled her glass again. Alcohol was bad for the baby, but fuck it; she didn’t care.
“Do you even know how messed up my life has been?” She turned around, attacking her mother who was already on the staircase. “It’s been hell, woman! I’ve become a laughingstock and can’t even hang out with my friends anymore! People say I wasn’t good enough to keep Kage despite being pregnant for him!”
She walked away from the bar but didn’t get close to Rebecca. “Sometimes, I wish I had a different mother. Perhaps, she’d have advised me to let go of my obsession with Kage, and then I wouldn’t be in this much of a mess right now.”
Taking the glass from the counter, she smashed it on the floor, then walked away.

Sylvie was on the edge as she sat in the small room. There were only two chairs in the room.-one of which she occupied- with a table in-between.
She continued glancing at the only window in the room, anticipating the moment he’d show up. She was doing the right thing-she constantly told herself.
Kage didn’t know she was there, and she didn’t want to imagine what his reaction would be if he ever got to know. But she had to do this to get it off her chest.
Finally, the moment came. She took a deep breath when the door opened and the cop led Westley into the room.
When their eyes met, she felt something akin to guilt build in her chest. When she newly became friends with him, never imagined a day would come when she’d have to pay him visits in jail.

But he brought it upon himself. He killed Paul, and Kage was next. That couldn’t be overlooked.
“Wow. It’s the ex-fiancee,” he spoke in a dry voice as he took the seat opposite from hers.
His eyes were much colder than Sylvie knew them to be.
The cop that led him in had left, giving them their rightful privacy.
For half a minute, she remained silent, not knowing what to say to him.

Chapter 88
“You know, this isn’t like paying me visits in my apartment. In here, we have limited time,” Westley said, snapping some reasoning into her.
Lowering her gaze, she took a deep breath. “This shouldn’t have happened.”

“Was breaking up with me not enough?” Westley shook his head. “I stayed away from you, didn’t I? Was it really necessary doing this to me? Working with your ex-husband to get me arrested?”
The allegations were true. His company had indeed, smuggled goods illegally. But that was a long time ago. Not everyone was a saint, and Westley had made a mistake back then-one he didn’t intend to repeat. He had paid a lot of money back then to make sure the issue stayed buried, but of course, Kage had to dig it out and use it against him.
“I didn’t have a choice, Wes! You were going to hurt Kage. I couldn’t let that happen!” Sylvie rasped.
Westley’s brows furrowed in confusion. “Hurt Kage? You did this because I took over the Group’s project?”
Sylvie sighed. She never wanted to bring this up to him, but now she had to.
“I know you killed Paul.” It felt as if she was taking a huge burden off her shoulders. “I’ve known for sometime now but couldn’t find any strong evidence linking you to it.
“On the night he died, Paul had given me a warning note. Then, I heard from a reliable source that you were plotting something huge against Kage and killed Paul because he wouldn’t give you his support.”
“Woah Woah, hold on!” Westley scoffed, lifting his hand.
For a moment, he was gobsmacked. Then, a chuckle ripped from his throat. “What in God’s name are you talking about? Where in hell did you get such nonsense?”
Sylvie rolled her eyes. “I know you’d try to deny it – everyone would. But it’s okay, Wes. Besides, we don’t have any evidence yet. But I need you to know I was disappointed when I found out about it, which was the reason I broke our engagement. Like I said, this didn’t have to happen.”
“Are you for real!? Paul was my friend! A close friend!” He half-yelled. “How can you even think I killed him?”
Sylvie stared blankly at him.
“God, Kage is so st**id.” He laughed. “This was the crap he had to feed you to take you away from—”
“It wasn’t Kage!” Sylvie’s own voice rose. “Like I said, I got it from a reliable s—”
“Then, it’s crap!”
A lull fell between them. Westley leaned forward on the table. “I have never taken a life, Sylvie, and I never want to. All those times, you stayed with me thinking I was a murderer?”
Sylvie opened her mouth to speak, but no words were formed.
“I can’t believe you could think so lowly of me,” he added painfully.
The door opened, revealing the cop from earlier.
“Sorry, visiting time is up.” He announced from behind.
Sylvie’s heart was racing in her chest. She struggled to gather her thoughts as Westley stood up, ready to leave.
“Listen, I don’t know where you heard what you heard, but if someone really told you that, then something deeper is going on. I don’t understand why anyone would want to frame me for Paul’s death, but I’d never stoop so low, Sylvie. Never.”
