John hated the way Calvin looked at him.
In his mind, Calvin should be like a dog and bite the dust.
But this dog dared to show his teeth to him right now.
John tossed the cigarette end to the ground and stepped hard on it. He grinned cruelly and said, “Why can’t you learn from your lessons? Guys, beat him up.”
Shirley knew something bad was going to happen and she stepped in front of Calvin to protect him.
“John, Calvin didn’t know what he was saying. He didn’t think twice before he talked. Please don’t take it seriously. We’re not renting this place anymore. Let’s just leave.”
John sneered, “Leave? To where? You’re the one who wanna rent my house and I drove all the way here. How you gonna pay the gas money?”
Seeing that he wanted money, Shirley’s hands were shaking and she took a wrinkled plastic bag from her pocket and grabbed some wrinkled change.
“This is all I have. John, please show some empathy.”
John gave his men a look and one of them came up to get the money with his hand covering his mouth, “Did you pick that up from the toilet? Why does it smell so gross?”
“Mr. John, there’s only 7 dollars.”
John didn’t take it from his hand and simply just set it on fire with his lighter, “Think of it as a gift for you so you wouldn’t be so poor in hell. You’re not gonna live long anyway.”
“You...” Calvin’s hands clutched into fists so hard that they could hear them cracking. John was unbelievably apathy and vicious and there was no way for Calvin to let that slide.
“Calvin, calm down. Mary, please talk some sense into him. You used to be Calvin’s girlfriend.”
Since John was being such a jackass, Shirley had to beg Mary to help them.
Mary was sitting on her high horse and snorted, “What more can I say? He is the one who thinks too highly of himself. He knew you are about to die and wants to give us hell. Who would rent this house again if someone had died in there? This house is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. What you did is unforgivable.”
“Mary, you...” Shirley didn’t expect to see a girl who was once so nice to be like that.
“And don’t ever mention the past again. I’m still disgusted when I think of the food you made me before. It was like pig-wash. Even a pig wouldn’t wanna eat that.”
John’s men burst into laughter, “Pig-wash? Doesn’t that mean that they are mama pig and baby pig? Hahaha, no wonder why they all stink.”
Calvin couldn’t take it anymore and stepped forward with courage that none of them could see.
“Keep your mouth shut. If you say that kind of things to my mother one more time, I won’t let you leave so easily.”
John paused and then looked at Calvin like he was some kind of foul creature, “Is he tryna pick a fight with me? How dare you?”
“Who knows.”
“John, I really wanna punch somebody today. Don’t waste your time talking with him.”
John finished laughing and then glared at Calvin, “You loser, I don’t wanna make my hands dirty. Now, kneel with that wrinkled old hag. Both of you, kneel.”
Calvin didn’t know how scary he looked right now, like a life-sucking ghoul.
Especially his eyes. There was no mercy in his eyes and they looked like he was going to slaughter the world.
Calvin glanced at him and John shuddered unconsciously, “Asshole, how dare you look at me like that! Beat him up now!”
The three men that he brought with him were carrying their baseball bats and cornered Calvin.
Shirley was terrified and went on begging, “Please, stop this nonsense. Don’t hurt my baby boy.”
One of those guys swung his bat and knocked her to the ground.
That man didn’t feel sorry at all and was about to hit her again.
“Shit, you fucking hag. You’re a slum dog just like you son.”
Shirley saw that the bat was coming towards her head and she covered her head subconsciously.
Then, a big bang.
The man’s eyes were wide-open because his bat was blocked by an arm and his hands started bleeding.
Calvin’s eyes turned red and his face was distorted, “How dare you hurt my mother!”
Mary was leaning on the car. From her angle, it looked like Calvin was hunching his back because he got hit.
“Calvin, let me give you some advice. Listen to John and kneel. I’ll ask him to let you leave.
Otherwise, you asked for it and there’s nothing I can do to help you.”
“Ha...” Mary heard a taunting laugh. She went forward and looked at Calvin unbelievably.
“Are you laughing at me...”
“I’m laughing because you really think too much of yourself.”
“You...” Mary didn’t anticipate that Calvin would be the one who said that to her.
“You...stop what you’re doing right now.” John’s ankles were seized by Calvin. The pain growing from his ankles horrified him.
Calvin didn’t waste any time and snapped them nice and neat. Mary just stood there and watched John’s ankles being bent backward.
“Ahhh...John, are you okay?”
John’s eyes were about to pop out. He couldn’t believe his own eyes.
Calvin let go of his ankles and John’s legs were swinging from the top of the car like an over-stretched spring.
Calvin turned around and Mary could see his blood-red eyes. She fell down on her knees.
“I…leave me alone.”
She was stuttering and didn’t know what to say. She wanted to beg for mercy but her pride didn’t allow her to do that to a man that she despised.
“Don’t worry, I won’t lay a finger on you.”
Calvin said that like he was a God and she was nothing like an ant.
Mary was irritated. She thought to herself, “How dare you say that to me? You’re nothing. You’re good at fighting huh? John was just tricked and he won’t let this pass. You’re gonna die in a very bad way.”
Thinking of that, Mary wasn’t so scared anymore, “Hmm, you wouldn’t dare to do that. John won’t let you live. You’re gonna kill us both? Just do it!”
Watching the woman he once loved acting crazy, Calvin couldn’t feel a thing.
“Go to the hospital and get yourself a physical examination later.”
“You’re the one who should be tested! You sick little bastard!”
Calvin didn’t say anything again. That piece of advice was like a closure to their past.
When he was beating John, he had already known that John had AIDS and syphilis and he would be dead in three months.
And of course Calvin wouldn’t save him. He even used the dark magic of the compass to speed up the progress.
Consequently, Mary was infected and what was waiting ahead of her was endless torture.
“What goes around comes around. It’s all karma.”
Calvin held Shirley up and said, “Mom, let’s go.”
