Violet’s POV
At six in the morning, when the sky outside is quite cloudy and still dark, I’ve already gotten out of bed and knocked on the door of Neil's bedroom.
As always, there is no answer. He is not at home. I guess again he has spent his night at some casino.
When entering the living room I smell a disgusting stench. The floor is covered in boxes of instant noodles, beer cans, and dirty clothes Neil had taken off.
This is one of the reasons I hate Neil for.
He always makes our house a mess and asks me to clean it. As he said that’s my reason to exist-
To be his housewife.
I take a deep breath, put on my apron and rubber gloves, and start to clean as it’s my everyday task.
I collect all the trash in a big black garbage bag, throw it outside the door, put Neil’s dirty clothes in the washing machine, and start to mop the floor.
If as expected, Neil will be back at noon, and I have to prepare lunch the ready before then. Otherwise, he would be so mad.
Knock-Knock-Knock-
There is a knock at the door. I put down my mop, take off my rubber gloves and open the door. A plump woman with curly red hair appears with a bruised face. Her forehead is red and blue, the corners of her mouth are bloodstained, the left side of her face is horribly swollen and her eyes are bruised.
This is my friend Kelly. And she is holding her baby girl Mia in her arms.
"Violet......" She sobs.
"Did that bastard hit you again?" I ask in anger.
Kelly cries and nods.
"I'll teach him a lesson!" I roll up my sleeves, want to go to Kelly’s house and beat that bastard up, but Kelly stops me.
"He's not at home. He just left. I think he went to gamble too. That's why I dared to leave the house and come to you." Kelly says.
I sit Kelly and her daughter down on the freshly cleaned couch, manage to find a clean glass, and pour Kelly a glass of water.
"Thank you." Kelly chokes up.
"When are you going to divorce George?" I ask.
Kelly holds the glass near her mouth and hesitates for a while before taking a sip of water.
"Divorce?" She puts down her glass and shakes her head, "I never thought about that."
"Then it's time you think about it."
"But I can't leave my children without a father... Besides, I have no job, and I don't know how to live without him." Kelly’s face is shed with tears.
I sigh and think that was a stupid decision.
Kelly and I were good friends in high school where Neil also went to.
On my 18th birthday, I smelt out that Neil was my mate and so he became my boyfriend.
Kelly used to be the cheerleader in our school and a heartthrob for boys. But she never found her mate in our pack. She used to have a lot of choices but settled on scumbag George. In my opinion, her marriage to George was a totally taken-in by the man’s blandishments.
Also, after Kelly got pregnant and got out of shape, the jerk changed his attitude.
He began to hate Kelly for being “too obese”, and spending all his time on alcohol and gambling. He soon gambled away his fortune, and blamed all this on Kelly, saying that she is the jinx.
He eventually started to beat Kelly after getting drunk.
Oh, I forgot to mention that Neil and George met at a gambling table. It was Neil who introduced George to Kelly.
"You can support yourself and the baby. And I'll help you, George is not a good..."
Choice.
Before I could finish my words, the door of the living room is kicked open.
Neil is back.
Neil is clutching his dirty jacket in his hands, which smelled of cigarettes and alcohol, and his brown hair is matted. His tawny eyes dart around the living room as he shouts, "Fuck!"
"Why haven't you cleaned up the house? ! Where's my breakfast? And why did you let this bitch in here? Didn't I tell you not to let her set foot in my house without my permission? Get her and her kid out of my place!"
He barks at me like a mad dog.
Kelly is scared. Also the baby. Mia starts to cry.
Kelly looks at Neil warily as if she has done something wrong, but indeed she hasn’t. She looks sorry but the hurt and pathetic expression on her face does not arouse Neil's sympathy.
He glares at Mia fiercely. "So freaking noisy! Just shut her up!"
