“Don’t cry, OK?” Looking down at his sobbing wife, Matthew did not know how to soothe her.
Blanca was really drunk. She felt dizzy and hot. She even forgot that she was still at the party. She raised her head and fixed her eye on Matthew’s handsome face, with her cute, sad eyes, like there was no one else in the hall. “Don’t leave me again, Matthew! Or I will tell everyone your secrets,” she said.
Matthew didn’t speak. He smiled a little and lifted Blanca, leaving the Country Garden. Most guests stared after them with envy. There was much talk after they left.
“This is unbelievable. Mr. Grant was so protective of Mrs. Grant.”
“God, Mr. Grant is so nice and tender. I wish I had a husband like him.”
“Mrs. Grant is so lucky. I’ve heard Mr. Grant has mysophobia, but I knew it was just nonsense when I saw how Mrs. Grant lay in his arms and cried.”
“Oh, yes of course! They are husband and wife.”
Louise was white with rage to hear that. In her memory, Matthew had never been so nice to anyone, including her. She thought Blanca didn’t deserve it at all. “Blanca!” murmured Louise through clenched teeth.
Malinda understood some of her moods. She took her hand and said, “Don’t worry, Louise. Matthew will fall in love with you sooner or later.”
