Chapter 508 Yes, I’m Not
The room fell silent as soon as she asked the question.
Her palms were filled with sweat, and her heart was hammering rapidly in her chest.
“If you don’t want to answer the question now…”
“I’m not.”
Suddenly, a voice came over from the bed. It was not the cold and mechanical voice of the phone but the deep and magnetic voice of a man.
Kyran continued. “I’m not mute.”
His voice was raspy due to his condition. Even though Deirdre felt surprised at his answer, she was
relieved at the same time.
It was because his voice was totally different from that of Brendan.
“If you’re not mute, then why didn’t you tell me about it? Why do you always use your phone when you’re talking to me?” Deirdre frowned and bombarded him with many questions. “What are you scared of?”
Kyran looked at her and placed his finger on his neck. He had prepared in advance for a situation like this. There was a thing that looked like a button on his neck.
“Listen to me, Deirdre. I’ve never told you before that I’m born mute.” Kyran looked at her alluringly. “My vocal cords were damaged because of an illness, so I couldn’t speak. I’ve been treating them, but the results aren’t satisfactory. So I never told you about it. I planned to tell you about it when I recovered, but then something happened to you.”
Deirdre closed her eyes and asked, “But you were still using your phone to talk to me when you met me…”
“Do you still remember how much you resisted my company back then?” Kyran smiled bitterly. “You thought I was someone else and that I was lying to you, so how should I open my mouth and tell you about my condition? If I had opened my mouth and spoken, I would have only made you even more suspicious of me. After all, it’s hard to explain something like this.
“In the end, I decided to talk to you through my phone. Then I planned to tell you that my vocal cords had recovered when the time was right.”
At that moment, Mrs. Cox popped her head in and asked, “Deirdre, are you talking on the phone? Why is there another person’s voice in the room?”
Deirdre turned her head, but she was tongue–tied. She did not know how to explain to Mrs. Cox at all.
Kyran nodded at Mrs. Cox and said, “Mrs. Cox, it’s me. I’m the one who’s talking.”
“M–Mr. Reed?” Mrs. Cox was stunned. She covered her mouth. “Aren’t you…”
“My vocal cords have been recovering, so after a night of rest, I can talk now,” explained Kyran.
Even though Mrs. Cox was surprised, she still nodded. “Really? That’s great! This way, you won’t have to use your phone to communicate anymore.”
“Yeah.”
Deirdre placed her hand on his chest. She never expected Kyran’s voice to be so gentle at all. She felt that she had fallen for him even more as she asked, “Mrs. Cox, do you need my help in the kitchen?” “No, it’s okay. I’ve already finished. It’s just chicken soup. Can Mr. Reed stand up?” asked Mrs. Cox.
