Not long after, the old Mrs. Lawson released Sophia from her embrace. She couldn't continue holding her like that, or else she wouldn't be able to leave.
The old Mrs. Lawson approached Laura, and despite the many things left unsaid between them as mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, she knew that if she didn't speak now, there might never be another chance.
"Laura!" The old Mrs. Lawson called out.
Laura couldn't hold back her tears any longer and began crying.
"Good child," the old Mrs. Lawson said while trying to comfort Laura,"It is I who should cry and apologize for my behavior towards you all these years."
"For decades I disliked you; I gave you a hard time and even threatened Abbott to divorce you on multiple occasions." She continued speaking with regret in her voice,"Now I realize my mistakes; I know that what I've done is unforgivable but everything related to the Lawson family is now in your hands."
Laura was unable to bear this kind of responsibility being placed upon her shoulders; she shook her head while crying out, "Mom! Please don't say such things! It's not your fault!"
"You are a good child who has never held grudges against me." The old Mrs. Lawson replied with remorseful eyes,"But as a mother who has committed so many wrongs against you over the years, it's difficult for me to ask for your forgiveness."
"Mom! Please stop blaming yourself!" Laura cried harder as she spoke,"I have never blamed or resented you!"
"You are too kind-hearted." the old Mrs. Lawson sighed deeply before continuing,"For making me happy, you gave birth to four sons - each one of them exceptional - but still it wasn't enough for me because of my own shortcomings... I owe them all an apology just like how much I owe it to you. Laura... it was all my fault!"
Laura shook her head again in disbelief.
"I know Sophia would always be your little princess no matter what and you chose to take her side every time, which only intensified our conflicts further. Yet it was not your fault. I realized it too late."
"This may be our last goodbye before we part ways forever." She paused briefly before saying, "But don't worry, Laura. I hope in our next life, you will be my daughter-in-law once again, and if possible, I wish for nothing more than having you as my daughter instead."
The words spoken by the the old Mrs. Lawson made Laura cry even harder than before.
Between the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, they had never spoken to each other like this before. It was the first time, and perhaps the only time in their lives.
"Alright, don't be sad anymore. I'm leaving now. You all take care of yourselves, and I'll feel at ease!" The old Mrs. Lawson glanced at Drake, indicating that he could take her away.
Drake nodded.
Suddenly Laura shouted, "Mom!"
The old Mrs. Lawson turned to look at her, both of their eyes were red. The scene infected others too; everyone's eyes turned red as well.
Finally, the old Mrs. Lawson steeled herself and walked forward.
Laura shouted after her, "Mom! You don't have to worry about anything at home or William's affairs; we will do our best for you! Take care of yourself; we're all waiting for you to come back!"
The old Mrs. Lawson didn't turn around or react in any way.
Drake followed behind them and signaled that they didn't need to worry because he would safely escort them where they needed to go.
Until their figures disappeared from everyone's sight, Laura held Abbott tightly while crying uncontrollably.
The four brothers looked towards Sophia together; no one spoke but understood what each other was thinking deep down inside.
