Chapter Sixty: My Sister’s Mate
“Come in.” I called out, clearing my throat as I watched the door to my office swing open.
My sister and her mate stepped into my office. Her pink hair was damp and hung around her shoulders. Her normal dark eye makeup had been scrubbed off and she looked so much younger. Her lips parted in a grin and I couldn’t help but smile at seeing her so happy. Being mated looked good on her. I just hoped that her mate would be able to keep her out of trouble.
“Hi, Jason.” She said, “I want you to meet my mate.”
“Hey, Nicole.” I nodded, looking over at the man beside her. His dark brown hair was brushed away from his face. He had on a pair of khaki shorts and a black concert t-shirt. I could feel his beast. He wasn’t strong like me. He felt calmer and that was what Nicole needed, someone to calm her down and be the voice of reason.
Nicole’s mark was clear on his throat and his mark was visible on her marking and binding them to each other.
The door closed behind him, and I was hit with the fading scent of sweet cherry candies. I tilted my head to the side, breathing in the scent that was coming from my sister’s mate. It was like he had spent a lot of time around Tillie, and her smell was part of him. Not like it would be mixed if they were mated, but I knew this was him. The one that had rejected my mate.
“This is Jake.” Nicole said, coming deeper into my office before she plopped down onto the leather chair that sat in front of my desk.
“Congratulations on finding your mate.” I said, swallowing hard. Looking between my sister and her mate, he hadn’t looked away from me. His brown eyes grew dark and I wondered if he could smell her on me. He had to, there was no way that he wouldn’t be able to smell Tillie on me. The scent of my mate clung to my skin mixing with my scent to let others know that we were together.
pressed my lips together, my wolf wanted to punish him for hurting her. For making her sad. But, I knew that wasn’t an option. If anything, I should be thanking him. If he and my sister hadn’t gotten together, Tillie would have never gone into Savage. I wouldn’t have mated with her.
“Why do you smell like Tillie?” He asked, his eyes slitted as he glared at me.
My sister twisted around in her chair, looking back at her mate. “What are you talking about, Jake? My brother doesn’t smell like the human that you rejected earlier.”
“Yes, he does. I know her scent and he’s covered in it.” A panicked look filled his eyes, his hands fisted at his side, and he let out a low growl before stepping closer to me, “You didn’t hurt her, did you?”
“I wouldn’t hurt her.” I let out a growl of my own. While I could appreciate him looking out for my mate. I didn’t like him accusing me of hurting her. Resting my hands on my desk, my muscles tensing in my legs, readying myself for a fight. Staring at Jake, I let my power move over him, trying to force him to submit.
I wasn’t going to be questioned about Tillie by him.
“Goddess, Jason Stop with the alpha thing. He’s still a little upset about how he ended things with his human.” Nicole said, reaching back to take her mate’s hand. She tugged him closer to her, trying to soothe him.
“She wasn’t my human, Nicole,” Jake said, an exasperated sigh slipping from his lips. “Tillie was my girlfriend.”
“I see.” I said, waiting for him to say more. The fact that he was upset about how things ended with her made me feel better. But I needed to know that he was over her. Well, as much as he could be for breaking up with her this afternoon.
I also needed to make sure that he wouldn’t hurt my sister. She might be tough, but she was soft deep down.
“Tillie, she, she wasn’t a shifter but she was a good person.” Jake said, his shoulders slumping. Sadness perfumed the air and I looked at my sister, watching the way her hazel eyes softened as she watched him.
“She wasn’t your mate. You would have broken up with her sooner or later. This saves you both a bunch of heartache. She can find .. Bome human to love her.”
:: I knew that my sister was just trying to comfort her mate, but her words worried me. Was that really how she felt about shifters
having human Mates? I wanted them to get along but if she couldn’t accept that I was with someone who was human, I didn’t know what I was going to do.
“You don’t need to worry about Tillie.” I said, leaning back in my chair.
“See, baby. Jason gets it.” Nicole said, giving his hand a squeeze, “You will be okay and so will she.”
Jake didn’t say anything, his eyes were still glued on me. His adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed hard. I knew that he was trying to fight the compulsion to submit to me. He wasn’t a member of my pack, but the push from an alpha was hard to ignore. His brown eyes grew dark. “You didn’t answer my question. Why do you smell like Tillie?”
“Why are you concerned with who I smell like?” I asked and he finally gave in, dipping his head. His eyes lowered down to the floor before shooting back up to mine.
Jake straightened his shoulders, standing taller. “I care about her. We were friends before she became my girlfriend and even though she isn’t my fated mate. I don’t want her to get hurt.”
“She won’t be.”
Nicole’s head rolled to the side, her eyes piercing into mine. “Jason, what do you mean?”
“I have no plans to hurt Tillie.” I said, speaking slowly for my sister and her mate.
“Jason…”Nicole said, her eyes going wide as she started to piece things together. “Are you saying what I think you’re saying?” “Yes, I’ve found my mate.” I said, sitting straighter. Trying to prepare myself for my sister’s anger over my being mated to a human.
