Chapter 17 

Winston emerged from the restaurant. Eli spoke to him from the other end of the call, “Mr. Greer, there’s something—” 

“Get to the point.” 

“Ms. Lowell asked for your schedule just now, and I mentioned you were at The Nouveau. She might…“Whil li was speaking, Winston spotted Joanna waiting for him by the entrance. 

He hung up on Eli. Watching Joanna’s petite figure, he found it intriguing and unbelievable that a fragile woman like her had fought back against the abductors. 

He was reminded of Jake’s advice to him–that he could only choose between Joanna and Millie. 

He realized that he had to pick Joanna over Millie. Joanna was a fine young lady, and he didn’t have the heart to put her under more pressure or compel her to make additional sacrifices. 

He approached Joanna. “Jo.” 

The woman turned around and flashed a quiet, subservient smile at him. “Win.” 

He looked down at her with gentle eyes. “Why are you here instead of resting at the hospital?” 

“Win, I’m sorry for what happened back at the villa. I was worried and restless all day because of it. I went looking for you at your office and home, but you were away. I had no choice but to ask Eli about your schedule. 

“Win, please don’t be angry at me. I know I made a mistake.” She gently grasped his arm, her voice as gentle as silk. 

Winston could understand where she was coming from. Always 

carrying herself cautiously around him, she was afraid to make any mistakes. Her recent sleight of hand was a test of his sincerity 

regarding marriage, which he confronted her over at the hospital. 

“I won’t be angry at you,” he assured her, playfully pinching her cheek and taking her hand. 

She sounded worried. “Really?” 

Winston was shrewd; his mind was hard to read. ery time he gazed at her, she’d check If the look in his eyes was genuine or just for show. 

“Joanna, you need to trust me. Okay?” He bent over and stared at her dotingly. 

She nodded in response. While they were chatting, she looked behind him. She spotted Millie emerging from the restaurant. 

Upon seeing them, Millie turned around to leave. 

“Mills!” Joanna hurriedly called out to her. 

Millie glanced back, listening as Joanna continued, “I’m sorry for what happened at the villa… It was my fault.” 

Millie said nothing. She opened the car door to enter the car. To her, Joanna’s apology was utterly useless and revolting. 

At the same time, Winston called out to her, “Millie.” 

Joanna tightened her grip on Winston’s arm, feeling rather uneasy and doubtful of his action. 

Millie leaned against the car door, meeting his eyes with 

indifference. “Go on.” 

“Let’s meet at 9:00 am tomorrow at the courthouse to file for divorce,” he said calmly, a brooding look in his eyes. 

She stared at him out of the corner of her eyes. She clutched the fan

tighter but soon gathered herself. Winston’s gentlemanly behavior was a stark contrast to his rogue behavior of aggressively kissing her just now. 

She thought, “Men are really irresponsible, aren’t they?” 

Beaming gently, she offered a curt reply, “Sure.” 

“Shall we?” Winston turned to Joanna, inquiring, “Have you eaten? Let’s go for dinner.” 

Meanwhile, Joanna was taken aback by the unexpectedly smooth discussion of the divorce. She figured that Winston had intended to offer her reassurance by broaching the topic of divorce with Millie present. 

Observing Millie, Joanna couldn’t help but be surprised by her lack of reaction. She wondered, “Is it that simple to make Winston mine? 

Millie’s purple Pagani glided past them without hesitation. Winston briefly glanced at Millie’s car as he opened the door for Joanna, then quickly averted his gaze. 

Inside the car, the atmosphere felt stifling. Joanna had no idea where they were headed; thoughts of the divorce filled her mind. 

Doubtful about Winston’s decision, she blurted out, “Win, are you seriously getting a divorce from Mills tomorrow morning?” 

“Yeah,” Winston confirmed. 

Joanna tightened her grip on her seatbelt. She whispered, “That’s good. It’s a relief for both of you.” 

The look in his eyes deepened. Was it? He questioned whether his three–year marriage had ever truly constrained him, and the answer 

was no. 

If anything, it was Millie who would likely feel reliqua +

“Now that you’re divorcing Mills, I need to work harder to gain the favor of Uncle Brian,” Joanna remarked. 

Winston clasped her hand, offering a sense of assurance she had never felt before. However, Joanna was mindful that Winston hadn’t chosen to marry her solely out of love; his decision was influenced by the fact that she had “saved” him in the past. 

Regardless of Winston’s motivations, Joanna had achieved her objective of marrying him. 

As she gazed out of the window, Joanna silently wished ill upon Millie. With Millie out of the picture, no one would discover that it was she who had truly rescued Winston, not Joanna. 

The following morning, Millie arose bright and early. She applied makeup while on a call with Marvin. Marvin asked, “There are two premium bids in the black market this morning. You interested?” 

“What bid?” She put on lipstick and pursed her lips. The color looked bright and perfect, a good match to her slip dress. She looked like a seductive siren. 

“A buyer offered 100 million dollars for a stalk of that Snowdrop!” 

Raising a brow in amusement, she drawled, “Is that Snowdrop such a valuable herb?” 

Marvin sank into a short silence before asking, “Boss, tell me the truth. Are you in possession of that Snowdrop herb?”
