Chapter 312
“Joanna, before this, I would have given you my blessing if you were truly in love with each other. But-” Gloria extended her arm, gesturing at her bodyguard to get her the newspapers.
News about Joanna had made headlines, filling up the entire front page. There were reports about her falsified qualifications and the termination of her employment at Bifrost Hospital.
Joanna’s expression crumpled when she saw the news. Her worst nightmare had come true. She proposed to Winston hastily, hoping to seal the deal before the news reached the Greers, but it was too late.
“Just look at you. How can we accept you into our family? You’ll only bring disgrace to us.” Gloria tossed the newspaper at her without hesitation.
Joanna stumbled a few steps backward. Her heart shattered when she saw the newspaper that had fallen onto the ground.
“Ms. Lowell, the Greers are not an ordinary family. We do not simply approve of any woman who dreams of marrying our son. I’ll stay out of your business if you remain friends with Winston, but you should never dream of marrying into the Greer family!”
After deriding Joanna, she turned to Winston and barked, “Winston Greer, come with me!”
“Mom, why are you making such a fuss?” Winston’s voice dropped to a hushed tone.
Gloria’s actions had left him feeling utterly embarrassed–an adult in his 20s shouldn’t be dragged into such drama in public.
Why would she risk a fallout with Joanna? If the Lowells learned about this incident, another quiet battle would kick off between the two families.
“Winston, if you refuse to leave with me, I’ll take it as you choosing Joanna over your family!” Gloria hissed.
Winston was taken aback by the extent of Gloria’s aversion toward Joanna. How could she suggest cutting ties in an attempt to threaten him?
Millie and Simon exchanged looks. He whispered, “I heard of Mrs. Greer’s dislike of Joanna, but I didn’t know she hates her this much!”
Millie flashed a helpless smile at him.
Gloria gave her son an ultimatum, “You can only choose between Joanna and your family!”
Millie glanced at Winston, Gloria had no choice but to force him to make the difficult decision. So, what would he pick?
It hit her that Winston had been repeatedly making choices over these years.
“Let’s go.” Millie cast a gentle look at Simon.
He asked, “Don’t you want to watch until the end?”
She shook her head. “What’s the point of doing that?”
When they took the elevator down, Simon mused, “Millle, what would your decision be if you were in
BONUS
Winston’s shoes?”
She carefully pondered the question before answering, “I don’t know.”
Winston couldn’t win. He was asked to pick between his first love–whom he had pined for years and wished to marry–and his family.
Smiling, Simon held the car door open for Millie. When she stepped into the car, he piped up, “If it were me, I would choose you without a doubt.”
She paused in surprise. Did he just vowed to pick her?
She teased, “But I’m not one of the options.”
He entered the car and buckled the seatbelt. “It might seem so at first glance, but the decision is all about
you.”
Gloria’s refusal to approve of Joanna stemmed from her unwillingness to see Winston divorce Millie. Choosing the Greer family would mean choosing Millie
