Millie’s thoughts were muddled. Hence, she did not notice that Winston was following her.
Simon stepped on the accelerator, hoping to leave Winston in the dust. However, the latter sped up, too. As the cars reached the overpass, rain pounded on the windows.
Right then, Millie inadvertently spotted Winston’s car in the rearview mirror. There was a pause before
she turned back to look.
“Winston is following us,” said Simon.
What was he doing there? Wasn’t he supposed to take Joanna home?
Millie thought about it for a moment, then answered, “Maybe he’s just going the same way.”
But Simon did not think so. He could tell Winston was not going the same way from his accelerating.
The two cars raced on the overpass.
Winston, with his impressive driving skills, would intermittently find himself side by side with Simon.
As Millie looked at Winston’s vehicle, she felt a myriad of emotions swirling within her.
If he was indeed following them, did that mean he cared about her, even just a little?
Nevertheless, Millle could only entertain fleeting thoughts and refrained from having high
expectations. After all, humans often ended up disappointed because their expectations had been too high.
Millie lowered her head, refusing to look at Winston’s car again.
It was not until they got off the overpass that his vehicle stopped, no longer following them.
As she stared at the rearview mirror, Millie’s heart sank.
Sure enough, Winston was not following them. He was merely going the same way for a little while.
She could not help but reflect on her relationship with him. Winston had never loved her. Their connection was simply temporary.
Millie leaned against the window, gazing outside with a heavy heart.
Simon, too, was surprised that Winston stopped following them.
Was he really not following them? But what did Winston mean by doing so?
As the raindrops fell on the glass, their pitter–patter filled the air with a sharp rhythm.
Winston lowered the car window, allowing the rain to enter, while the breeze served as a wake–up call.
He could not help but think he was out of his mind.
How could he chase after Millie’s car in the middle of the night? Wasn’t he the one who never cared about her?

With their marriage coming to an end, what did it matter to him whom Millie chose to be with?
Winston took a deep breath. He then took a cigarette from the glove box and lit it.
Inside the dimly lit car, Winston furrowed his brow as he was aware that his actions tonight were strange. Yet, he could not quite put his feelings into words.
He leaned back against the seat with his arm resting on the windowsill.
The cigarette flickered faintly but was soon extinguished by the rain.
Ding!
Winston’s phone chimed.
It was a message from Joanna. “Have you arrived home?”
Winston pursed his lips and replied, “Yeah.”
Joanna texted back, “Win, thank you for braving the rain to send me home tonight. I’m so touched. I love you very much.”
Winston stared at the words, yet he was unmoved.
For some reason, every time Joanna said she loved him, his heart did not flutter. He wasn’t even. happy.
However, when Millie told him she had fallen in love with Simon, Winston felt an odd sensation deep
down.
He cleared his throat and chose not to reply to the text.
The rain poured throughout the night..
When Millie arrived home, the living room lights were still on. Just as she was about to tiptoe upstairs, Terrence’s voice came from the kitchen.
