“What’s going on? You stay in the car; I’ll go check it out,” he said while opening the car door.
Winnie ignored him and got out of the vehicle as well.
They both froze in shock when they got closer and saw who it was.
“Mason? What happened to you?” Josiah exclaimed as he knelt beside Mason to examine his injuries.
At that moment, Xavier arrived home and saw the bloody scene outside the garage.
Thinking some kind of accident had taken place, he exited his car and ran up to them as quickly as he could.
“What happened here? Why is Mason covered in blood?”
“I don’t know! I’ll go get the first aid kit!” Winnie replied. Saving Mason’s life was all that she could think about at the moment.
However, Mason reached out and grabbed Winnie by the ankle right as she was about to run off.
He was gripping her ankle with all his might as though his life depended on it.
“Don’t go, Ms. Garland… There’s something I need to tell you. It’s probably too late to save me, so don’t bother wasting your time. Just stay here and listen to what I have to say,” Mason mumbled weakly.
“What are you talking about? We have a doctor and medical supplies here! You mustn’t give up on your life just yet!” Winnie shouted at him before casting Xavier a glance.
Having known her for so long, Xavier knew what she wanted without her saying it.
“You stay here and talk to him while I go get the first aid kit. I’ll be right back,” he said before running off.
“Hurry up! He’s losing a lot of blood! We need to get him to a hospital for a blood transfusion as soon as possible! Winnie and I will carry him into the car!” Josiah shouted at him from behind.
“Got it!” Xavier replied as he continued running into the mansion.
Winnie and Josiah then carried Mason into the minivan parked inside the garage.
It was a lot more spacious inside and had better lighting, which would make treating Mason’s wounds a lot easier.
Despite being used to seeing all sorts of grisly injuries at the hospital, Josiah shuddered when he switched on the lights in the minivan.
Mason’s abdomen was almost entirely covered in wounds of varying depths. There was barely an inch of his skin that wasn’t damaged.
“I’m sorry for dirtying your favorite photo, Greta… I love you… Just like the sun, you light up the darkness around me and fill my heart with warmth. I wish we didn’t have to meet each other in that horrible place. If there is a next life, I would like to be by your side again. Well, if you want me around, that is. Please pass this message on to Greta, Ms. Garland. Tell her that I want her to be happy. You see, I know that she and I are from different worlds. She’s an optimistic and kind-hearted girl. I, on the other hand, have been killing people from a very young age. Things never end well for men like me, but that’s not the case for Greta. I’m sure she’ll be able to live a great life filled with positivity. Is she a police officer or a soldier? I tried to kill Harold today, so I’m really worried that he’ll go after her for revenge. Will she be safe?”
“Yes, Mason. She’s very safe here in Chanaea. She—” Winnie tried to reassure him, only to realize that his eyes were slowly losing focus.
She closed her eyes and looked away as the final signs of life faded from his body.
Josiah, too, stopped trying to save him when he saw that.
He already knew that Mason was dying when he examined his wounds earlier. Most of Mason’s internal organs were ruptured and showed signs of severe hemorrhaging, so there was no way to save him at all.
With a heavy heart, Josiah glanced at his watch and announced Mason’s official time of death.
As Mason’s eyes were open when he died, Josiah tried to close them for him, but to no avail.
Winnie glanced at Mason’s fingers, which were still gripping Greta’s photo tightly, and continued where she left off, “She’s a police officer that stands for justice. She’ll be very safe here, and she’ll live a wonderful life, so you don’t have to worry about a thing. I’ll be sure to relay your message to her.”
It was possibly just a coincidence, but a tear happened to flow out of Mason’s eye after she said that.
When Winnie tried to pull his eyelids down this time, they remained shut. He had a serene look on his face.
