Chapter 217
As I mulled over the matter, I arrived at my home. After parking my car in the garage, I grabbed my purse and entered the elevator. Opening the door, I heard laughter coming from the room. Jolene was sitting on the couch next to my mother-in-law and sister-in-law, laughing as they talked.
Hearing the sound of the door opening. Eliza turned and rudely asked, “Finally back now?”
This kind of rude questioning used to happen in the past, but I was really upset about it that day. I admitted that seeing Jolene sitting here and having fun with my mother-in-law and sister-in-law touched a nerve.
Though I ignored her, Eliza didn’t feel the least bit embarrassed. Instead, she got up and stopped me. “Lilian, what were you doing at the hospital today?”
I looked at her in surprise. How did Eliza know about my trip to the hospital?
Before I could speak, my mother-in-law immediately intervened: “What? Lilian didn’t go to work? How did she end up in the hospital?”
“I saw her with my own eyes, so how could I be wrong? She was with a man at the time, and they quickly got out of the car and rushed to the hospital.”
“With a man?” My mother-in-law squealed, the expression in her eyes changing as she looked at me. “Are you sure you saw her?”
“Of course I’m sure. The man was even holding her hand. I saw it clearly.” Confident that I had some dirt on me, Eliza aggressively questioned me, “Lilian, who was that man?”
Her voice was very loud, so even Carson could hear her from the kitchen. So he came out and admonished, “Eliza, why are you talking so loudly?”
“Carson, I saw Lilian and a man holding hands at the hospital today. I just want to hear her explanation.”
“You must be mistaken. Why would Lily hold another man’s hand?” Even though Carson said that, his eyes still turned to me. Eliza had obviously informed him of this before I returned, so he was clearly waiting for my explanation.
I looked at Eliza with disgust. “Eliza, are you interrogating me?”
“How is this an interrogation? Lilian, you are a married woman. Can’t I even ask why you were holding hands with another man?” Eliza fired back.
“Of course, you can ask, but whether I want to answer is up to me. What can you do if I refuse to say anything?”
This was the first time I had spoken to Eliza in such a disgusted tone, leaving her so shocked that she jumped off the couch. “Carson, look at her! What kind of attitude is that?”
“Yes, what kind of attitude is that? Eliza can’t even ask her a question?” my mother-in-law chimed in.
