Heather and her family watched the screen, transfixed. Alex was standing next to Elsa on what appeared to be a stage, surrounded by police officers in crisply pressed uniforms. She abruptly recognized the setup for what it was. An awards ceremony!
“What is this?” Carmen asked in confusion.
Heather’s assistant smiled as she said, “This is an official police award ceremony, Mrs. Jennings. If I’m not wrong, a few days ago, your son–in–law worked together with this policewoman to stop a robbery from happening in a nearby bank.”
“According to the news, there were as many as ten robbers at the time. They were ready to kill all of the staff working at the bank. In the nick of time, your son–in–law and the policewoman stood up to take them down, defeating them all in the end and saving the bank staff. Oh, also, I heard that your son–in–law even ,got shot once, didn’t you know that?” The assistant was shocked to learn that the family didn’t know about
that.
“Really? Are you serious?” Carmen was gaping. She had never expected Alex to be of any use, much less the ability needed to pull off such a feat.
“They’ve got to be pulling our legs,” Lucas said in disbelief. “There’s no way that useless lump can stand to ten robbers.”
up
Alex had been a parasite in their house for four to five years by now. Lucas was more than certain he understood Alex’s behavior. Whenever people pointed accusing fingers at him and yelled at him for being a good–for–nothing slacker, he did not even dare to make a sound, much less retort. The man was a useless coward. How could a person like this dare to take on ten bank robbers and win?
Lucas felt like this entire matter was insulting his intelligence.
“It’s true,” Heather said calmly. “He got shot in the left shoulder and I went to visit him in the hospital.”
But her heart was far from calm. In fact, Heather wanted to rage against the universe.
Why?
Why is it that every time when I finally decide to divorce you, you will manage to find a way to draw my heart back to you?
The conflict in her heart was tearing her apart. Heather sighed. A second ago, she thought that Alex was a criminal destined to rot in jail forever. The righteous anger she felt had already fueled her determination to divorce him.
But in the next second, Alex was no longer a criminal but a hero of the people. His family would be a hero’s family, which meant the Jennings‘ were a part of his heroism. Could she still justify divorcing Alex then?
“N–now what?” Carmen was still trying to grasp the situation,
Ironically, the useless lump who lived on scraps had become an admired hero.
At this time, on the television, the host of the ceremony announced, “If it weren’t for our hero, Mr. Alex Jefferson and Captain Sawyer risking their lives to battle the robbers, none of the staff working at the bank would still be alive! And who knows how many innocent people those robbers would have gone on to kill?”

“And so,” the host continued, “to honor such a brave act, our department has decided to award Mr. Jefferson with the title of the People’s Hero. We will also be awarding him with ten million in cash as a token of gratitude and encouragement. Captain Sawyer will also be given the title of Captain of Heroes, as well as having this merit recorded… ”
Seeing the banner for the ten million award in Alex’s hands, Carmen’s eyes were practically shining.
Ten million was not a small sum. In fact, it was positively astronomical.
Although Heather still owned 10% of the shares in Jennings Corporation, but the dividend payout period was still far off, so her family was tight on cash. That aside, the company’s business earnings were also nothing extraordinary. Even if they received the dividend payout, there was no way it was going to be anywhere near ten million.
