Chapter 974 New Clues
Even though Elsa’s room was open, Alex stopped at the door instead of entering.
The officer was on the phone, her expression cold and solemn as she spoke to the person on the other
end.
“All right. I’ll deal with this case as soon as possible… Don’t worry. I’ll do my best.”
Alex had no idea what was being discussed, but he waited until Elsa had hung up the phone before knocking on the door.
Upon seeing the man, the latter broke into a smile that washed away her gloom. “Ah, you’re here! Come
on in.”
After entering the room, Alex took a seat and instantly cut to the chase. “You mentioned previously that you needed my help. What is it about? Are you sure it’s something not even you guys can resolve?” I wonder who could be so formidable to leave the police this desperate and helpless… One thing’s for sure-that person’s no ordinary individual. After all, everyone in the police station is armed and highly trained. Besides, Elsa seemed so serious about it that I’m sure it’s no simple matter. In any case, it’d be prudent to hear her out first before agreeing to anything. I need to know if the task is within my capabilities, too. If the opponent is far too powerful for me, there’s no way I’d risk my life for this. I only have one life, for goodness” sake. I don’t need to deal with any more suffering
Elsa, who was pouring Alex a cup of coffee, found her smile gradually fading away as she heard his question. The next second, a sigh escaped her lips. “Well… It’s a long story. Some time ago, a terrible incident happened in my jurisdiction. A middle-aged man was killed in the parking lot of World Trade Plaza. I pinned it as a murder case early on, but as the investigation progressed, I realized it wasn’t as simple as it seemed. Not only have similar incidents been happening recently, but they also occurred in the past. Homeless people were suddenly disappearing, and while that wasn’t entirely unusual, it became concerning when large groups of them vanished without a trace. Then, after we found the body in the underground parking lot of World Trade Plaza, many people started coming forward to report that their family members had gone missing. Worst of all, those living in the more remote areas even claimed they saw people getting dragged into cars and vans. As of now, we have a total of eighty-six missing person reports, and that’s not including the homeless people. The exact number of victims may well have crossed the hundred mark. Naturally, the case is creating a stir, and I’m being pressured by upper management to solve it as soon as possible. Otherwise, we won’t be able to hide it any longer, and there will be widespread panic in Nebula City. It’d be even harder to conduct our investigation when that happens…”
A look of weariness crossed Elsa’s face as she sighed again. “Our upper management is stressing me so much that I haven’t slept well in two days and two nights… Who knows when we can rescue those poor victims? The longer this drags on, the more danger they’re in.”
After hearing Elsa’s explanation, Alex, too, heaved a sigh. If even the police’s investigation isn’t panning out, what more can I do? Then again, why is the perpetrator capturing all these people? What’s their intention?
“I don’t think I’d be of much help,” Alex said with a shrug. “You guys don’t even know the location of the victims, so what makes you think I’d know any better?”
“I…” Elsa said before her voice trailed off. That’s right… We don’t know the location, which is precisely why I wanted to seek Aler’s help in the first place. For some reason, I know he’s someone I can wholeheartedly trust and depend on. That’s why I always think of him when there are problems I can’t solve. Wait a minute… Why am I suddenly feeling this way?
With that thought in mind, Elsa stole a glance at Alex.
