Janet shook her head.
“I’m fine. Don’t call the police.”
She took a deep breath as if trying hard to calm herself down.
“Nelly, can you get me my clothes, please?”
Nell held her gaze with quiet intensity.
She knew that an average person would not dare to treat Janet so horribly, given the latter’s family background. Besides, she was always protected by bodyguards thus no scoundrel could approach her easily.
Perhaps… There was something more to this unfortunate incident.
Without pressing further, she turned around to gather Janet’s clothes. Then, she assisted the latter to freshen up in the bathroom before leaving the hotel room.
Leith Garden.
Aunt Joyce was over the moon when Nell returned home with another girl that appeared on television before.
“Aunt Joyce, this is my friend, Janet. She might be staying with us for a couple of days. Please prepare some lightly seasoned supper and bring it upstairs.”
“Ah, sure.”
Nell assisted Janet into the room.
“Nelly, I’d like to take a bath.”
“Alright.”
No one had stayed in the guestroom before but it was always equipped with the essential products.
Nell filled the bath and left her friend alone. She stepped out of the room and instructed Aunt Joyce to get the doctor.
A female doctor had been hired as one of the family doctors since her moving into Leith Garden. Although it was almost Chinese New Year, the doctor was based in Jincheng and lived not far from them. It was not too much of a hassle for the doctor to come over.
Nell arranged for Janet to be examined by the doctor after the bath.
“We know this doctor well. Don’t worry! No one will hear about this.”
Nell explained upon sensing Janet’s concerned gaze.
Janet finally let her guard down. The doctor instructed her to remove her clothes. Nell, who could not bring herself to watch the process, turned around to leave the room.
About ten minutes later, the doctor walked out of the room to announce the end of the inspection.
Nell asked about her friend’s condition. She was told about the wounds and a tear in Janet's private area. No further questions were asked since Nell had already gathered enough information. The doctor was dismissed after prescribing some medicine.
She returned to the guestroom once more to find Janet already dressed, staring out to the window with her back resting against the bed frame.
“What actually happened? Can you tell me now?”
“Nelly, I don’t want to talk about it.”
She looked rather pale and her eyes appeared dazed, even her voice was fleeting. To say she was weak was an understatement.
Nell furrowed her brows.
“I’m starving. Is there any food?”
As if sensing the tension in the air, Janet turned to flash a faint smile at Nell.
The latter felt a surge of frustration coursing through her. “Hungry? At least that means you’re still far from being dead.”
Despite the angry comment, she went downstairs personally to deliver the supper prepared by Aunt Joyce.
Janet was knackered by the time she finished the meal.
Nell could not bring herself to bother the woman. The latter must have a good reason to keep the misfortune to herself.
Albeit still annoyed, she allowed the other person to rest without pressing further.
The next morning.
It was the thirtieth day of the twelfth month of the lunar calendar. Gideon called to notify her that he would be home by afternoon to spend Chinese New Year together.
This caught Nell by surprise. The man mentioned before that he would go to the capital. She thought he would stay there for the festive season as well.
She had led a life of vagrancy in the past few years, thus, no relatives or friends were waiting for her even though she had returned home. Jason did not accompany her during the festive season as he normally headed home to spend time with the Mortons. This had led her to feel less enthusiastic about Chinese New Year.
She had always thought being alone was not a big deal.
It finally occurred to her that she must have been too accustomed to that!
Aunt Joyce was naturally delighted about Gideon’s return. She cooked more dishes and even prepared alcohol. It was going to be a lovely dinner tonight.
The man came home at 5:00 pm.
His sharp-eye noticed the unfamiliar shoes positioned by the door and quickly realized that they had a guest.
