Or could it be that she's grown tired of looking at my face every day? But this face is all I have to show for myself. Whatever I have, she has too. Presumably, she wouldn't be impressed, let alone catch her eye.
Seeing the shift in his gaze, Bailey knew he was lost in thought and couldn't help but laugh and tease, “I'm lying here beneath you. What else could you possibly be worried about? When did the dignified head of the Luther family and the ruler of Tarragon become so insecure? How can he feel that he can't even keep a woman by his side?”
Artemis looked her up and down, scoffed, and said, “Are you just an ordinary woman? If you are, then why is it that every move you make seems to cause international impacts? When you went to Moranta, the local forces there were on high alert, fearing that any misstep might provoke you and lead to their complete downfall. Now that you've arrived in Yannopolis, stirring up a storm, all those arrogant and unrestrained noble families are behaving themselves, tucking their tails between their legs. They're afraid of crossing and upsetting you, fearing catastrophe. Hmph! You're quite a capable woman, aren't you?”
Upon hearing those words, Bailey was so amused that she burst into laughter. She playfully punched him in the chest a few times, expressing her annoyance, “Whether it's Moranta or Yannopolis, the Hoffman family or the Rogers family, is it fair to blame me for the mess you've made? You've done things only a debauched monarch would do, yet you've managed to shirk all the responsibilities and just pin all the blame on me. Artemis, it's not fair for you to treat me like this. I'm completely at your mercy right now. Are you enjoying bullying me?”
Artemis sneered, ungraciously saying, “If I am a debauched monarch, it's only because you've led me astray. When it comes down to it, you're still one step ahead of me. No matter how capable I am, I can only follow your lead.”
Annoyed, Bailey was no longer in the mood to deal with him, reaching out to push him away. Who really feels more insecure? It's me, okay? Just from a single trip to Gregan, he managed to attract the attention of Cersei and Eunice, two heiresses from prestigious families. Who knows how many other women are pining for him in corners I can't see. He has won the affection of so many other women, and now he has the audacity to question me blatantly whether my love for him will fade with time. Where does he get his courage from?
Seeing that his wife was genuinely angry this time, how could Artemis let her push him away?
He propped his iron-strong arms, as sturdy as wooden posts, on either side of her body, firmly holding her within his embrace. “Not long ago, you were joyfully asking me to marry you. Now that I'm taking you back to Hallsbay to get married, you're refusing. I can't fathom what's on your mind, so I'm feeling insecure and fearful.”
Seeing him in that state of anxiety, Bailey held back her laughter. But in the end, she couldn't help herself and burst out laughing.
She gently reached out to cradle his face, chuckling lightly. “Do you remember what I told you about Faceless? She's coming for The Art of Semblance in my possession, determined not to stop until she achieves her goal. Therefore, I suspect she will attack me. You wouldn't want a couple of flies to ruin our wedding, would you? We've already delayed it for so long, so a little more delay won't hurt.”
Artemis' expression eased a bit. So, that's the reason, huh? Well, I can accept that.
“Artemis—”
Before Bailey could speak, he leaned in and kissed her. “Focus on the task at hand and don't get distracted. Only by loving you properly can I find a sense of belonging.”
Bailey fell silent. Can I interpret that what he loves is only my body?
In a daze, a ring of the doorbell echoed from the entrance hall.
She steadied Artemis' shoulder with one hand, warning him with her eyes not to move recklessly, while with the other hand, she reached for the cordless phone on the bedside table.
As soon as it was brought to the ear, the butler's voice came through the receiver. “Ms. Bailey, Ms. Rogers wishes to see you. She seems quite urgent. What do you think?”
Bailey cast a glance at the man on her, sighing silently. If I sneak out now, will he give teach me a lesson tonight? However, Catherine has always been calm and composed. Her sudden urgency to see me might mean that something has changed with Luna's situation.
Even though she yearned to surrender herself to this man, to let him do as he pleased, she dared not neglect her duties.
“All right. I'll be right down. Have her wait for me in the living room for three minutes.” After ending the call, she braced herself and said to the man, who was already in a sexy mood, “Catherine came looking for me. She seems to be in a hurry. It's possible that something has happened to Luna.”
Artemis responded with a soft hum, but his hands didn't pause in their movements for even a moment.
Bailey couldn't help but roll her eyes. You responded so quickly, but you're not moving aside. “How about we deal with this later tonight? Your niece's life is more important.”
