Her apology was heartfelt because she felt that the person she had let down the most in her life was Edmund.
Edmund was the most outstanding descendant of the Chivers family, possessing noble character and integrity.
If he hadn't met her, he would have certainly accomplished great things.
With his abilities, he would've surely upheld the Chivers family's honor and elevated them to a higher level, making them stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the Luther family.
But now, all the hopes and expectations of Yoel and Gwendolyn had been completely destroyed by her.
If Edmund had never met her, he would probably have had a successful career and plenty of children by now.
Alas, he encountered her and was tricked by her. His vow to never get married shattered all hopes for the Chivers family.
At times, she wondered what kind of feelings Edmund must harbored for her to make such a declaration. He must've loved me very deeply.
The love was so profound and beyond her reach that even a lifetime of devotion wouldn't be enough to repay or reciprocate his feelings.
Gwendolyn looked at her with reddened eyes, her expression a complex mix of emotions. Just judging by this young lady's character, she's unquestionably good, and I feel a connection with her. Yet, fate can be playful. The heavens bestowed such good fortune upon Chivers Group but did not grant the two the chance to stay together. What's even more frustrating is that she is in love with the Chivers family's nephew, leaving us with no room to fight for her. If I incite my son to interfere in their relationship, it would lead to an infighting. Regardless of who wins in the end, both sides will suffer losses and live in regrets. Moreover, this girl and my nephew have three children together, and they deeply love each other. How can I dishonor the Chivers family's ancestors by goading my son into doing such a thing?
“Bay, you're here.” The gentle voice of Edmund reached Gwendolyn's ears, pulling her back from her wandering thoughts and breaking the awkward atmosphere in the room.
Bailey subconsciously turned her head and saw Edmund coming in through the side door, pushing a wheelchair.
The main entrance had steps and a threshold, which made it inconvenient for him as he was in a wheelchair.
This side door must have been specially opened by the Chivers family for him, leading directly to the front garden outside.
Edmund was a proud man. Having bodyguards carry him in and out every day would be a severe blow to his self-esteem.
Yoel and Gwendolyn understood their son, fearing that he might overthink because of that, so they tactfully handled the situation in a way that preserved his dignity.
The moment Bailey saw him, her eyes slowly reddened, a mist of tears welling up in her gaze.
Edmund turned his head toward Gwendolyn, smiling as gently as he always did. “Mom, Bay came over at this time, so she probably hasn't had lunch yet. Have the kitchen prepare a few dishes she likes. We can't let our guest go hungry when she comes over.”
Gwendolyn gave her son a significant look, sighed silently, and as she turned around, she discreetly wiped away the tears at the corner of her eyes.
She bore no resentment, yet she was somewhat bitter. She resented the way fate played with people, pairing two perfectly matched individuals yet denying them a future together.
After watching Gwendolyn leave, Bailey let out a gentle sigh, striding over to the side door. She stopped in front of Edmund and slowly crouched down. “Let me take a look at your leg.”
After she finished speaking, she carefully rolled up his pant leg.
The muscles on Edmund's right leg had fully recovered and no longer resembled the bare bones of a few months ago.
Bailey gently prodded the newly grown muscle with her fingertips, asking, “Does it hurt?”
Edmund shook his head with a smile. “It doesn't hurt. You don't need to be so cautious. You can apply a bit more force.”
Bailey finally breathed a sigh of relief.
If pressing the muscle didn't hurt, it meant the bone inside had healed.
