“I...”
Bailey wanted to speak, but it felt as if her throat was stuffed with cotton. She was unable to utter a single word. Indeed, if I can't give Edmund what he wants, what right do I have to pity him? My pity and heartache will only cause him to be further infatuated with me.
Edmund understood clearly, so he used death as a threat, forcing her to dispel the pity in her heart.
Artemis saw through it all, so he dragged her out by force, solely to decisively cut off Edmund's lingering thoughts and spare him from further exhaustion.
However, she didn't see it. She naively believed that her sympathy could soothe the pain in Edmund's heart.
Little did she know her sympathy and pity were the sharpest knives capable of hurting Edmund the most.
“It's not like that. I truly didn't mean to cause him trouble, nor did I ever intend to give him hope. It's just that seeing Edmund in that state, my heart aches. It hurts so much.” As she spoke, she suddenly burst into tears.
After all she had been through, there were very few things in the world that could stir her emotions.
But Edmund... that man who tugged at her heartstrings. A mere glance at him was sufficient to make her break down in tears.
Artemis gently relaxed her shoulders and chin, leaning in to kiss her eyes, inch by inch.
Only after he had kissed away the tears in her eyes did he say hoarsely, “His decision to never marry for your sake is his own. We can't influence it. But you can face him indifferently instead of constantly uttering words of guilt and pity. Since Edmund has let go, you should learn to be resolute as well. If you continue to pity him yet can't give him what he desires, you're only hurting him further and causing him more pain.”
Bailey was slumped in her chair, her body trembling slightly.
She truly was unemotional, or at least, she didn't know how to handle feelings she couldn't reciprocate. “Should I avoid seeing him in the future?”
Upon hearing her question, Artemis knew she was heeding his advice, and his gaze gradually softened.
He reached out and gently stroked her head, speaking softly. “There's no need to avoid him deliberately. From now on, just face him calmly when you meet. Drop any apologies, pity, or sympathy. If you keep on with these emotions, you're just pushing him to the brink of desperation. Do you understand?”
Bailey quickly nodded.
When she left the gazebo, she didn't understand, but she did now.
If it weren't for Artemis' timely reminder, she would've made a huge mistake.
After several months of recuperation, Edmund's heart had gradually settled down.
She was being foolish, almost doing something that would have tugged at his heartstrings.
“I understand now, Artemis. Thank you.”
Artemis picked her up again, smiling as he said, “Aunt mentioned that lunch is ready. Let's have a meal before we leave.”
In the evening, at the Xuereb residence, after much effort, Olivia managed to convince Justin to return home.
At the entrance of the living room, Justin ascended the steps. Seeing his mother standing at the door, visibly relieved at his return, he couldn't help but sneer inwardly.
Ever since Sloan regained consciousness and took back control, Scarlett had become increasingly unrestrained in the Xuereb residence.
Olivia needed Scarlett's help, so she often humbled herself, frequently enduring the latter's temper.
Every time Scarlett infuriated her, she would retreat to her room and smash things around. Then, she would vent all her anger on her husband.
Over time, Christopher found himself unable to bear that inexplicable rage, so he recently moved to the Xuereb family's mansion in the countryside by himself.
Before leaving, he asked his wife if she wanted to move with him.
