Upon hearing that, Victoria immediately lost her temper.
“Bailey, is this how you behave as a friend?”
Bailey couldn't help but laugh.
It was precisely because she considered Victoria as a friend that she made such a remark.
The latter and Lionel were not without affection for each other but were in love. In her opinion, all the fuss was just a waste of precious time they could be spending together, and a day would come when they would regret it.
“What I'm saying is the absolute truth. Lionel is Mrs. Shurmer's nephew. It wouldn't make sense for her not to care. If you were to get together with him—”
Before she could finish, Victoria interrupted her outright with a dismissive wave.
“I don't want to use connections to achieve my goals. Thank you for the suggestion, Bay. Indeed, the Shurmer family's logistics are impressive. I will discuss this with Mr. Zeke. Since it's a collaboration, it naturally has to be established on the basis of mutual benefit. He delivers goods for me, and I shall pay the shipping costs. I'm not going to pull strings.”
Bailey shook her head with a smile.
The Shurmer family's logistics are used for transporting medicine. Hence, all their channels are green channels. Could she be so naive that she believes a simple business collaboration would be enough to garner the Shurmer family's agreement? The Shurmer family isn't strapped for cash, so they'd never lower their status to work as a porter for others. If I don't step in, there's a high chance that her request will be rejected if she approaches Zeke rashly.
“Okay, okay, whatever you say. Our beautiful and capable Victoria has enough skills and capabilities. I'm sure you can persuade Mr. Shurmer to collaborate with you.”
Despite saying that, she inwardly decided to help till the end, planning to visit the Shurmer residence in a while to give Zeke a heads-up.
They chatted for a while longer before Bailey finally stood up and left.
Victoria wanted to see her out, but she declined.
After leaving Saunders Group, Bailey drove to the Shurmer residence.
Although she was reluctant to set foot in that house, not only was her loving and doting brother there, but her cherished disciple was also there. Thus, she couldn't just cut ties with them all.
Blood was thicker than water. Even if she wanted to cast it away, she couldn't do so.
Initially, Waverly was in the kitchen making soup when she heard the doorman report that Bailey was visiting. She quickly untied her apron and personally went to the living room to welcome her.
Just as she reached the steps, she bumped into Bailey, who was going to ascend them.
Their eyes met. There was no tension between mother and daughter. One trod carefully, while the other wore a cold expression.
Waverly started somewhat hastily, “I didn't know you were coming and didn't prepare anything. If I had known you were coming, I would have definitely made proper arrangements.”
Bailey noted her cautious demeanor, and her gaze softened slightly, no longer as cold and hard as before.
After a few months, her resentment toward her so-called “biological mother” had faded. All her emotions were gone with the wind, leaving behind endless indifference.
Ultimately, she couldn't bring herself to cling to her as she did Felicity, let alone take her arm and act coquettishly.
“Zoey is dead. Her death was tragic, and nothing remains of her. She headed toward irreversible doom step by step, and it was all my doing. Then, there's Zeke. You originally wanted him to marry a lady from a prestigious family, but I paired him with my disciple. Mrs. Shurmer, I have indeed led both your son and daughter astray. You don't need to appease me. You can glare at me just like you did in the past.”
In a flash, tears escaped the corners of Waverly's eyes.
She stumbled down the steps, reaching out to grab Bailey's arm.
With a swift sidestep, Bailey dodged. Her expression was impassive, devoid of joy and sorrow as she looked at the woman. She inclined her head and said, “I'm here to visit Mr. Shurmer. Please lead the way, Mrs. Shurmer. Thank you.”
That was probably the most indifferent and distant mother-daughter relationship in the world.
With tears welling in her eyes, Waverly sobbed, “Zoey brought this upon herself, and her death was more than deserved. I won't blame you. Bay, I've made mistakes and am unworthy of being a mother. But I still hope that you can give me a chance to make amends, in view of me bringing you into this world.”
Bailey's face had taken on a somber hue, her eyes betraying suppressed emotions. On the surface, she seemed indifferent. But deep within, a storm had long since been brewing.
Zeke, who learned of Bailey's visit, hurried over. At the sight of the mother and daughter in a standoff at the bottom of the stairs, he quickly said to Sammy, “Please escort Ms. Bailey to the study.”
