Given everything that had happened, the situation was no longer under their control.
Dexter claimed that Tarragon's men did not attack Veikko and the others, but the Saviors would not believe him.
They only trusted what they saw and believed they were attacked, so no amount of explanations would convince them otherwise.
“Artemis, are we really destined to be separated from each other?”
Artemis shot her a glance and pulled her into his embrace. “Don't worry about a thing. I'm sure we'll be able to find a solution to this problem. In the worst-case scenario, I'll give up that identity of mine.”
Bailey flashed him a wry smile and shook her head. “I'm not some ignorant young girl, so those lies won't work on me. You have access to all of Tarragon's top-secret data, so there's no way they'd just let you walk out of that life. They'll most likely put a bounty on your head the moment you talk about quitting.”
Artemis pursed his lips when he heard that.
Oh, that's right... She's the leader of the Saviors, so she knows all too well how these organizations operate. It's true that they're bound to come after me if I so much as bring up quitting. I had nothing to fear when I was single back then, but things are different now. I have a wife and kids, so I cannot afford to make any mistakes.
“Well, I was just making a suggestion. We're not at the point of no return just yet, though. We can stop the war if we find out who the mastermind is and catch that person.”
Bailey narrowed her eyes and asked, “Do you have any suspects in mind?”
“It's most likely a high-ranking member within Tarragon. I still don't know why he chose to start a war between Tarragon and the Saviors. Let's just wait for an update from Dexter. He should be able to find some clues.”
“Fair enough. You can go ahead and work on this while I do some research in the laboratory. Veronique's condition is worse than I thought. Her cancer cells are spreading rapidly, so I need to stop the spread before it leads to organ failure.”
“I'll go with you.”
“No, you should focus on your own tasks. You'd only be able to wait outside the laboratory anyway, so why waste your time?”
Artemis couldn't help but let out a wry chuckle after hearing that. “As much as I hate to admit it, I am indeed unable to help with your research. I'm so useless...”
The look on Bailey's face turned slightly gloomy. “I won't talk to you anymore if you say such things again.”
