Chapter 880 Ending Her Life
Sofie found herself in a state of indecisiveness as she began to contemplate what further use Zoey could be to her.
From her point of view, everything and everyone, except her son, could be used to her advantage.
That included her own daughter.
She's nothing but a burden. I don't expect her to support and care for me until my final days. I brought her home and took her in because she still had some use to me.
“Do you think she still needs to come back and visit me? Since she's so keen on putting up a tough front and thinks she'll be better off without me, let her fend for herself in the cruel, outside world.”
“But she has the Encyclopedia of Poison.”
Sofie suddenly jumped from the sofa. Astonishment was written on her face as she asked, “What did you say? Does she really have the Encyclopedia of Poison in her possession?”
The voice of the bodyguard rang through the microphone again. “Indeed. I've found out that Mr. White helped her escape from your estate. Since then, she has been living with him. A few days ago, she suddenly left his residence. I initially thought they had a falling out, but upon thorough investigation, I discovered that she had stolen his Encyclopedia of Poison.”
Sofie got excited.
The Encyclopedia of Poison records all the poison-crafting skills in the world. If I can get my hands on it, I'll be like the Yablon family—respected and feared by countless people.
“What are you waiting for? Hurry up and bring her back to me. Although she has lost her usefulness, the Encyclopedia of Poison is something everyone, including me, dreams of. You must bring her to me before Kurt gets to her.”
“Right away.”
After ending the call, Sofie paced back and forth in the room, bursting with excitement. She couldn't contain the joy in her heart.
I'll be invincible if I have the Encyclopedia of Poison. The Yablon family acts so arrogantly because they rely on such a thing. If I have it in my hands, I can rebuild my reputation. Who would have thought Zoey could still bring such a pleasant surprise even after losing her usefulness? Haha! It seems like Heaven is watching over me! One day, I will stand at the top of the world and look down at everyone with pride.
Meanwhile, in the study at Kurt's residence, he lounged on the sofa, idly toying with the jade beads in his hand.
Across from him, a person in black had just finished a phone call.
He was the only confidant Sofie had left, but he had already been won over by Kurt and betrayed Sofie.
“So... Did that old hag believe you?”
“Rest assured, Mr. White. No ambitious person can resist the allure of the Encyclopedia of Poison. It's only natural that a goal-oriented person like Sofie would get involved. She wants me to bring Zoey back to meet her.”
Kurt's lips curled into a smile. His voice was light and playful as he said, “When you go back this time, will you think of the old master-servant relationship after seeing Sofie and once again—”
Before he could finish speaking, the man in black dropped to his knees with a thud.
“Mr. White, Sofie has lost her power and influence. If I continue to side with her, it would be akin to courting my own destruction. Besides, you've cured a long-standing ailment of mine, for which I am immensely grateful. How could I possibly repay kindness with enmity?”
Kurt clenched the jade beads tightly and slowly stood up from the sofa.
He approached the man in black and reached out to help him up. A wretched smile formed on his face as he uttered, “I'm short of talented people like you by my side. Stick with me, and you'll ascend to great heights.”
The man in black quickly nodded in agreement. “I have faith in your abilities, Mr. White. I'm certain you'll carve out a niche for yourself.”
“Great.” Kurt nodded in satisfaction. “As the saying goes, a wise man submits to circumstances. I believe you know how to make choices for yourself. I won't say more. Apart from escorting Zoey back to see Sofie, I have another task for you.
He leaned in and whispered a few words into the man in black's ear.
“Do you understand what you must do?”
“Yes, sir. I will certainly complete the task and bring back what you desire. By the way, should I prepare a fake copy of the Encyclopedia of Poison before meeting with Sofie?”
“I have already prepared that and handed it to Zoey. You only need to take her to meet Sofie when the time comes. Oh, you must also help me protect Zoey. It was not easy for me to train a poisonous person. To me, she still holds great value.”
“Yes, sir.”
Meanwhile, in the guest room of the research base, a piercing scream of terror shattered the tranquility of the early morning.
“Oh no! oh no! Ms. Aisley has slit her wrists in an attempt to take her own life!”
In the next moment, the entire residential area was thrown into chaos.
Simon hurried to the guest room. He narrowed his eyes in shock when he saw Aisley lying in a pool of blood.
Last night, he made it very clear to her that as soon as dawn broke today, he would take her back to the Lockett family.
However, he did not expect her to be so fragile and seek death so casually.
Any man would be annoyed to experience a woman throwing tantrums. Simon was no exception.
Although he rushed over to pick up Aisley, a glint of impatience flashed across his eyes.
He would've tolerated her and yielded out of their past affection if such a thing had happened once or twice. However, this had happened many times, and it was becoming boring.
Yet he wouldn't just let her die there. After all, they were once lovers.
“What are you standing there for? Hurry up and call a doctor! Can't you see she's still bleeding?”
The onlooking maids outside the guest room immediately dispersed upon Simon's roar of command.
Catherine was in the backyard picking flower petals. She couldn't help but sigh when she heard the noise from the guest room.
It seems like I need to have a serious talk with Simon soon.
She truly had no intention of breaking them apart. Hence, he did not need to care about her feelings.
If he truly loves Aisley, they can still be together. There's really no need to have things end up like this.
“What are you thinking about?”
A melodious female voice reached her ears, and she instinctively turned her head to look.
Seeing Bailey lazily leaning against an apple tree, Catherine chuckled and said, “I was thinking about how I should return Simon to Aisley. Your future sister-in-law attempted to take her own life. It seems to be quite serious. Aren't you going to take a look?”
Bailey couldn't help but giggle before replying casually, “I'm no saint. I might end up inviting trouble onto myself for trying to save her. You, on the other hand, seem selfless and saintlike. You truly live up to the reputation of being the eldest daughter of the Rogers family. Such magnanimity, I must admit, I fall short in comparison.”
The second part of her words were spoken with a tone of mockery.
Bailey initially thought Catherine would reflect on her actions, but she turned out to be unbothered.
Catherine flashed Bailey a tiny grin before she answered, “Hmm. I also think I'm quite selfless and saintlike. Thank you for the compliment. “I can't help it. The love story Ms. Aisley shared with me was so touching. It made me want to play matchmaker for them.”
Whatever.
Bailey was utterly defeated.
This woman's way of handling things is even more infuriating than mine.
“No more joking around. Let's get down to business. I thought of a plan last night. I wonder if it'll work.”
The smile on Catherine's lips was replaced with a frown as she asked, “What's the plan?”
Bailey nodded and replied, “The Encyclopedia of Poison and the Fragrance Journal are two of the oldest ancient archives. They have been passed down for thousands of years. Inside those books are many principles of how all things in the universe complement and antagonize each other. I want to gather them all, to see if there's a way to crack the mystery of the parasitic fragrance.”
