Kevan nodded with a straight face and comforted her stiffly, "Please accept my condolences."
His indifference made tears well up in Violet's eyes once again.
Looking up at Kevan, she opened her mouth to reproach him, but in the end, she pursed her lips without another word.
"Oh, is Kevan here as well?" Kevan's uncles appeared with their families in tow.
There were no signs of grief on their faces. Instead, they were smiling in satisfaction.
Bernard stared at Violet's face and remarked with displeasure, "Violet, I've told you before, this occasion is a celebration of life for Father. He passed away peacefully in his sleep. How could he rest in peace with you crying like this?"
Violet lowered her head wordlessly as her grip on Kevan's arm tightened.
Narrowing his eyes, Kevan couldn't stop the hostility that arose within him.
"It's natural to feel sad when a family member has passed away. On the other hand, what about all of you? Are you happy because Grandpa is at peace, or because you're about to get your hands on his inheritance?" he demanded.
"You bastard!" Bernard widened his eyes. "How dare you speak to your elders like that?"
In an instant, there was tension in the air.
Anthony pulled Kevan aside with a stern face. "Don't stir up trouble here. Aren't you busy with work? Go back immediately."
Kevan didn't want to leave, but he was also tired of seeing the smug looks on his uncles' faces.
"Fine." He nodded and left right away after saying goodbye to Violet.
When Kevan left the main hall, Bernard and Felix's families gathered together and started gossiping about him.
"When Father was still alive, his favorite grandson was Kevan. Whatever he desired, he received. What's the use of favoring that ungrateful bastard? Now that Father is gone, Kevan didn't even stay back to keep vigil! What a heartless child!"
Their voices were very loud, loud enough for Violet to hear every word.
Violet was already at the end of her patience. When she heard the sarcastic remarks they made, she couldn't bear it any longer.
Despite Anthony's attempts to stop her, Violet rushed up to them and shouted in anger, "Whose fault is it that Kevan has become like this? Back then, none of you had shown any concern when that tragedy happened. Don't assume that I'm unaware that all of you gloated behind our backs! Our family never thought of fighting for the inheritance as we have raised Kevan well—unlike your children! Each of your children is a useless leech that lives off their parents' wealth. Even at this age, they still don't know how to work hard and earn their own living!"
Violet was fuming mad. Her harsh words were brutally honest and left them no room to save face.
"Violet, what do you mean by those words?"
