Chapter 82
He snuffed out the cigarette with a heavy press. The master bedroom was as silent as the grave.
After a long pause, Elgin spoke up. “You sure? No regrets?”
“I’m sure, no regrets.”
“Good.” He cracked a slight smile, “Letitia, you’re gonna pay for this.”
Clarity returned to Elgin’s eyes, so did his sanity.
He had wanted to indulge himself just once, to let go of all the hatred and be with Letitia properly.
But… she wouldn’t have it. She was still as ungrateful as ever!
He strode out, and as he passed Letitia, he stirred a breeze that lifted her loose hair.
The moment the door shut. Letitia felt as if all her strength had been drained, and she slowly slid down the wall to sit on the floor. Once again, she had chosen her child
She reasoned in her mind, “Mom, Dad, it’s not that I’m not choosing you, but I’m banking on the day when the truth is revealed. Then, we can all be together again. Even if Elgin releases you now, you’d still have to live under a cloud of scandal.
Uncovering the truth and clearing your names is what I’m striving for. And I firmly believe that a day of justice will come. And the child… all I can do is try my hardest to keep him safe for now. He’s too fragile, and he only has me.”
Letitia hugged her knees, looking out the window at the endless moonlight.
The child still had her, and her parents were waiting for her to save them, but who did she have?
She only had herself, like a lone soldier in battle.
The road was tough and long, but she was determined to grit her teeth and keep going.
That night, Elgin didn’t show up again.
Letitia slept on the floor, which felt more solid to her than the luxurious bed beside her.
The next day when she went downstairs, the servants were unusually quiet, treading on eggshells as they worked.
Elgin sat leisurely at the head of the dining table, sipping his coffee as if nothing had changed, his face calm and unruffled.
He seemed no different than usual, but Letitia felt a chilling coldness emanating from him.
It reminded her of the Elgin she first met.
Back then, he was aloof and aristocratic, his gaze empty and condescending. Today, he had reverted to that state. And the distance between her and him had been stretched once again.
“Ma’am,” the butler inquired, “would you like oatmeal or sandwich?”
“Mrs. Ramirez Thank you.” Letitia pulled out a chair and sat down, silent.
Elgin acted as if she was invisible
Last night, his heart had softened for her briefly, but now… it was even harder than iron!
Letitia didn’t deserve it!
This heavy and quiet atmosphere was only broken when Mark showed up.
“Mr. Ramirez, Mark rushed into the dining room, “I finally found you!”
Elgin turned his head, “What is it?”
Mark glanced at Letitia, his expression hesitant.
“Speak, Elgin commanded, “out with it.”
Alright, Mr. Ramirez, actually… I have some good news for you.”
Elgin looked uninterested as he asked, “What good news?”
“Shela’s pregnant!” Mark announced jubilantly, “She felt unwell last night, complaining of stomach pains, and didn’t want to disturb you, so she asked me to take her to the hospital. And after a check-up, the doctor confirmed she’s pregnant!”
