Audrey had long been aware of Johanna's true colors. However, since Johanna was Freya’s stepmother and the lady of the Dawson family, Audrey maintained a polite facade. But after Johanna's son's disgraceful antics the night before, Audrey lost all interest in engaging with Johanna.
With a chilly tone, Audrey asked, “Mrs. Dawson, how much are you looking to borrow?”
“Not too much... just, just ninety million.”
Ninety million stopped Audrey in her tracks. Ninety million? The audacity!
“Mrs. Sutton, I know the Sutton family is wealthy and prosperous, and ninety million might seem like a drop in the ocean for you. I beg you to have mercy on me. We're facing a real crisis, or I wouldn't have come to you,” Johanna pleaded, desperate to redeem the precious pearl earrings that would soon increase in price beyond her reach if she didn't act quickly.
“Mrs. Dawson, you have the nerve to ask for ninety million as if the Sutton family is your bank?” Audrey was displeased with Freya's recent behavior, not to mention the previous night's episode. There was no way she'd play the fool and lend Johanna the ninety million.
After her blunt refusal, Audrey hung up without a second thought, leaving Johanna without dignity.
Johanna was shocked when the line went dead. Hung up on? When it sank in that Audrey wasn't gonna lend her the money, Johanna's face turned bleak with worry.
‘What now?’ she wondered.
If Audrey didn't lend the money, her only option would be to take out a loan, but no regular bank would lend such an amount to a stay-at-home mom at once unless she turned to loan sharks.
