Freya glanced at the chicken broth before her, her expression unimpressed and utterly devoid of appetite.
“I don’t want this,” she said after a moment, not even trying to hide her disdain.
“What would you like then?” asked Kieran.
With a mischievous glint, Freya responded, “There’s this diner about 300 feet left from Crescent Medical Center. It’s open 24/7. I quite fancy their food. Mr. Sutton, could you do me a favor and run an errand?”
Hearing that, Kieran took a deep breath, trying to mask his frustration. “Wait here,” he said before leaving the hospital room.
As soon as Kieran left, Freya started slowly sipping on her chicken soup. She smiled. ‘Hmm! It tastes quite good.’
Kieran had gone out of the hospital. It was the dead of night, and the surrounding apartment lights were off, leaving only the streetlights to guide him.
Following Freya’s directions, Kieran turned left from Crescent Medical Center, but even after walking 300 feet, he saw no sign of any diner. Finally, Kieran called Freya.
The phone went through quickly, and Kieran asked sternly, “Where’s the diner?”
On the other end, Freya feigned difficulty. “I can’t quite remember. Why don’t you look it up on your phone, Mr. Sutton?”
After she hung up, Freya chuckled, thinking, ‘That’ll keep him busy!’
With no choice left, Kieran reluctantly searched on his phone, only to find the diner was a kilometer away from where he was. His face darkened at the realization.
Without missing a beat, Kieran responded, “They’re for my girlfriend.”
“Oh, at Crescent Medical Center, right? We get a lot of folks buying burgers for their loved ones staying there. Coming out this late to get something for your girlfriend, you’re a good man.”
While she packed the order, Kieran’s thoughts drifted to Freya. If she knew about this diner, she must have been here before. But, Kieran had zero memory of any such visit.
At that moment, he realized how little he knew about Freya. He was unaware of her past, her likes and dislikes.
Yet, Freya seemed to know everything about him. From his favorite foods to his daily routines, she knew every aspect of his life, something Kieran found fascinating and slightly unsettling.
